Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.
Brandon Triche +19NP in 29M season: +32NP in 68M per 40M: +18.8NP
James Southerland +18NP in 22M season: +19NP in 47M per 40M: +16.2NP
Michael Carter-Williams +17NP in 29M season: +31NP in 61M per 40M: +20.3NP
Baye Moussa Keita +17NP in 13M season: +21NP in 36M per 40M: +23.3NP
Trevor Cooney +14NP in 20M season: +15NP in 24M per 40M: +25.0NP
Rakeem Christmas +10NP in 25M season: +18NP in 50M per 40M: +14.4NP
CJ Fair +5NP in 22M season: +23NP in 59M per 40M: +15.6NP
Jerami Grant +5NP in 16M season: +4NP in 22M per 40M: +7.3NP
DaJuan Coleman +1NP in 19M season: -1NP in 28M per 40M: -1.4NP
Comment: Triche and Carter-Williams backed up by Cooney gives us quite a backcourt. Keita’s and Christmas’s numbers will go up because they have MCW passing to them. Fair just had an off game. Southerland will be our “instant offense” guy. Coleman and Grant are projects at this point.
Shooting Breakdown: SU was 27/45 (.600) from inside the arc, 5/19 from outside, (.263) and 19/27 from the line (.704). Wagner was 15/44 (.341), 5/17, (.294), and 12/22, (.544), a really dismal performance. 20 of our 32 baskets were assisted, (63%), vs. 11 of Wagner‘s 20, (55%).

POP: I’ll credit the Axeman for naming this. A common stat is “points in the paint”. But what about the points outside the paint? The game gets a lot harder if you have to plow through the defense to get to the basket to score. Jump shots, (and not just three pointers), are an important part of any team’s offense. You can’t rely on them too much as they are the most inconsistent part of the game but you have to have the capacity to score over the defense or else you are likely to struggle. The formula is simple: Total points minus points in the paint minus free throws.
We scored 88 points in this game, 26 in the paint and 19 from the line so he had 43 POP in this game, or 49%. Wagner had 27 POP, or 47%. We averaged 26.4 POP last year, 35.8% of our points.

The “Offensive Dude of the Game”, (points + assists) was Brandon Triche, with 21 + 2 for 23.

Rebounding: Syracuse had 15 offensive and 34 defensive rebounds. Wagner had 13 offensive and 23 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 40% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 28% of the time. Wagner had 23 turnovers, of which 14 were Syracuse steals, (61%). Syracuse had 18 turnovers of which 11 were Wagner steals, (61%). We had 54 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 72.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:
Syracuse: 64 FGA minus 15 offensive rebounds plus 18 turnovers plus 47.5% of 27 free throws = 79.825 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 80 possessions in which we scored 88 points or 1.100 points per possession. Last season it was 1.126.
Wagner: 61-13+23 plus 47.5% of 22 = 81.45 possessions. Let’s call that 81 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 57 points or 0.704 points per possession. Last season it was 0.927.

I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 18-19, 18-4, 26-17, 26-17. Last year the averages per quarter were: 15-14, 19-12, 18-17, 21-18.
