Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.

Michael Carter-Williams +25NP in 28M season: +76NP in 124M per 40M: +24.5NP
Rakeem Christmas +19NP in 22M season: +45NP in 90M per 40M: +20.0NP
James Southerland +17NP in 23M season: +63NP in 100M per 40M: +25.2NP
Brandon Triche +14NP in 27M season: +46NP in 129M per 40M: +14.3NP
DaJuan Coleman +14NP in 18M season: +24NP in 62M per 40M: +15.5NP
Jerami Grant +9NP in 15M season: +12NP in 43M per 40M: +11.2NP
CJ Fair +6NP in 20M season: +40NP in 112M per 40M: +14.3NP
Baye Moussa Keita +5NP in 14M season: +26NP in 64M per 40M: +16.3NP
Trevor Cooney +1NP in 14M season: +13NP in 52M per 40M: +10.0NP

Comment: J-South can sure put up some numbers in a hurry. But he’s doing it on both ends now. I think once again we may have the country’s best 6th man. MCW is the one key player in any game. The rest can go up and down like an elevator bank but he’s got to contribute every night for us to be good. So far, he has. I’d like to see Triche became a guy we can rely on and he seems to be settling more into that role than competing with Michael. The guy I thought might be the star of this team, CJ Fair, kind of disappeared after his opening burst in San Diego. Coleman stopped using those high school moves and went to a catch and shoot/ rebound and follow mode and it worked for him. He even made a jump shot. Someday he’ll be AO inside but not yet.
The following players have led the team in net points in a game this year: CJ Fair, (1), James Southerland (1), Brandon Triche (1), Michael Carter-Williams (1).

Shooting Breakdown: SU was22/36 (.611) from inside the arc, 6/25 from outside, (.240) and 25/32 from the line (.781). Colgate was 9/28 (.450), 9/28, (.321), and 4/4, (1.000). For the season we are .546/.266/.704 and our opponents are .365/.284/.569. 18 of our 28 baskets were assisted, (64%), vs. 15 of Colgate‘s 19, (79%).

POP: I’ll credit the Axeman for naming this. A common stat is “points in the paint”. But what about the points outside the paint? The game gets a lot harder if you have to plow through the defense to get to the basket to score. Jump shots, (and not just three pointers), are an important part of any team’s offense. You can’t rely on them too much as they are the most inconsistent part of the game but you have to have the capacity to score over the defense or else you are likely to struggle. The formula is simple: Total points minus points in the paint minus free throws.
We scored 87 points in this game, 42 in the paint and 25 from the line so he had 20 POP in this game, or 23%. Colgate had 33 POP, or 65%. We averaged 26 POP last year, 36% of our points. So far this year we are again averaging 26 POP, 33% of our scoring. Our opponents have averaged 22 POP, but that’s been 42% of their scoring. We are giving up only 52.5ppgs.

The “Offensive Dude of the Game”, (points + assists) was Michael Carter-Williams with 8 points and 13 assists for a total of 21. So far the following players have been “Offensive Dudes”: James Southerland (1), Brandon Triche (1), and Michael Carter-Williams (2).

Rebounding: Syracuse had 13 offensive and 30 defensive rebounds. Colgate had 7 offensive and 25 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 34% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 19% of the time. We were actually mediocre on the offensive boards but very strong on the defensive boards. Colgate had 16 turnovers, of which 12 were Syracuse steals, (75%). Syracuse had only 6 turnovers of which 4 were Colgate steals, (67%). We had 59 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 38.
And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 61 FGA minus 13 offensive rebounds plus 6 turnovers plus 47.5% of 32 free throws = 69.2 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 69 possessions in which we scored 87 points or 1.260 points per possession. We are 1.088 on the season. Last season it was 1.126. We are winning easily and yet our offense really hasn’t been performing at full capacity.

Colgate: 56-7+16 plus 47.5% of 4 = 66.9 possessions. Let’s call that 68 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 51 points or 0.750 points per possession. They are 0.737 on the season. Last season it was 0.927. (In three games the opposition has scored 49, 57, 53 and 51 points. Those numbers won’t beat us very often.)

I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 25-18, 13-6, 20-12, 29-15.For the year, the average score per quarter is 20-13, 16-10, 20-12, 22-15. Last year the averages per quarter were: 15-14, 19-12, 18-17, 21-18.

I miss the offensive game vs floor game breakout. (I may not be using the correct terms). This seemed to provide a lot of insight. What were the individual components?

I'm doing a more detailed post onces a month so I'll have one after the Arkansas game with that. It's points- mfg and mft = "Offensive Efficenticy" and NP-OE= "Floor Game".

I've just finished posting the Carmen Basilio bio to the "other sports" board, complete with links to U-Tube clips of major fights. it's under the title "There Really Was One" in a series of posts covering first his beginnings and then each year from 1948-1961. You might want to check it out.

Thank you. Will do.
