Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.
James Southerland +30NP in 32M season: +93NP in 132M per 40M: +28.2NP
Michael Carter-Williams +19NP in 34M season: +95NP in 158M per 40M: +24.1NP
Brandon Triche +10NP in 31M season: +56NP in 160M per 40M: +14.0NP
CJ Fair +7NP in 39M season: +45NP in 151M per 40M: +11.9NP
Baye Moussa Keita +6NP in 25M season: +31NP in 89M per 40M: +13.9NP
Rakeem Christmas 0NP in 12M season: +45NP in 102M per 40M: +17.6NP
DaJuan Coleman 0NP in 12M season: +26NP in 74M per 40M: +14.1NP
Jerami Grant 0NP in 16M season: +12NP in 44M per 40M: +10.9NP
Trevor Cooney -1NP in 14M season: +11NP in 66M per 40M: +6.7NP
Comment: James Southerland had an historical game. I don’t keep individual game records for “net points” but 30 has to be one the highest totals’ I’ve recorded for an SU player. Carter-Williams had imperfect game but still an incredibly productive one, needing only one more assists for a triple-double. Considering it’s only his fifth start, (aside form exhibitions) and who we were playing and where, I think we can forgive his transgressions and enjoy his talent. Our big men were a non-factor with 6NP in 49 minutes.

The following players have led the team in net points in a game this year: James Southerland (2), CJ Fair, (1), Brandon Triche (1), Michael Carter-Williams (1).

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 22/42 (.524) from inside the arc, 11/26 from outside, (.423) and 14/24 from the line (.583). Arkansas was 19/38 (.500), 5/24, (.208), and 29/36, (.806). For the season we are .542/.311/.680 and our opponents are .394/.267/.648. 17 of our 33 baskets were assisted, (52%), vs. 11 of Arkansas‘s 24, (46%).

POP: I’ll credit the Axeman for naming this. A common stat is “points in the paint”. But what about the points outside the paint? The game gets a lot harder if you have to plow through the defense to get to the basket to score. Jump shots, (and not just three pointers), are an important part of any team’s offense. You can’t rely on them too much as they are the most inconsistent part of the game but you have to have the capacity to score over the defense or else you are likely to struggle. The formula is simple: Total points minus points in the paint minus free throws.

We scored 91 points in this game, 40 in the paint and 14 from the line so he had 37 POP in this game, or 41%. Arkansas had 19 POP, or 23%. We averaged 26 POP last year, 36% of our points. So far this year we are again averaging 26 POP, 33% of our scoring. Our opponents have averaged 22 POP, but that’s been 37% of their scoring.

The “Offensive Dude of the Game”, (points + assists) was James Southerland with 35 points and 0 assists for a total of 35. So far the following players have been “Offensive Dudes”: James Southerland and Michael Carter-Williams (2) and Brandon Triche (1).

Rebounding: Syracuse had 11 offensive and 32 defensive rebounds. Arkansas had 9 offensive and 26 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 30% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 22% of the time. We were actually mediocre on the offensive boards but very strong on the defensive boards. Arkansas had 14 turnovers, of which 8 were Syracuse steals, (57%). Syracuse had 20 turnovers of which 10 were Arkansas steals, (53%). We had 57 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). Arkansas had 54. We are an average of +12 MP for the year.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 68 FGA minus 11 offensive rebounds plus 19 turnovers plus 47.5% of 24 free throws = 87.4 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 86 possessions in which we scored 91 points or 1.058 points per possession. We are 1.081 on the season, (despite scoring 91 points, our efficiency was worse in this game- the points came from the pace of the game). Last season it was 1.126. Our offense really isn’t performing at full capacity yet.

Arkansas: 62-9+14 plus 47.5% of 36 = 84.1 possessions. Let’s call that 85 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 82 points or 0.965 points per possession. They are 0.789 on the season. Last season it was 0.927.

I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 30-15, 13-23, 24-18, 24-26.For the year, the average score per quarter is 20-13, 16-10, 20-12, 22-15. Last year the averages per quarter were: 22-13, 15-12, 21-13, 22-17. We’ve missed the 15 point mark only three times in 20 quarters this year and lost four quarters, the first three of them by a single point and they were all 15+ quarters until the second quarter vs. the Razorbacks, the first really bad quarter we’ve had all year.
