Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.
CJ Fair +27NP in 21M season: +72NP in 172M per 40M: +16.7NP
Rakeem Christmas +16NP in 21M season: +73NP in 144M per 40M: +20.3NP
Michael Carter-Williams +13NP in 32M season: +126NP in 222M per 40M: +22.7NP
Brandon Triche +12NP in 24M season: +83NP in 212M per 40M: +15.7NP
Baye Moussa Keita +10NP in 15M season: +58NP in 114M per 40M: +20.4NP
Jerami Grant +10NP in 21M season: +34NP in 80M per 40M: +17.0NP
Trevor Cooney +8NP in 20M season: +23NP in 104M per 40M: +8.8NP
James Southerland +3NP in 16M season: +100NP in 172M per 40M: +23.3NP
DaJuan Coleman +3NP in 25M season: +43NP in 121M per 40M: +14.2NP

Comment: Against Arkansas James Southerland had 30NP in 32 minutes. Against Long Beach State, CJ Fair had 27NP in 21 minutes. His NP per 40 increased from 11.9 to 16.7. Rakeem Christmas has 28NP in 42 minutes in the last two games and Jerami Grant has 22 in 36. In a game or two Trevor Cooney will be in “triple figures” and so the whole team will- again. Last year it was 10 of 10Since the 2007-08 season 42 of 46 scholarship players have averaged at least 10.0NP per 40. The ones who didn’t were Scoop Jardine, Kris Joseph, DaShonte Riley and Fab Melo- all as freshmen. We don’t get guys who can’t play here. That wasn’t always the case but it is now.

The following players have led the team in net points in a game this year: Michael Carter-Williams and CJ Fair, James Southerland (2) and Brandon Triche (1).

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 19/45 (.442) from inside the arc, 10/28 from outside, (.357) and 16/21 from the line (.762). Long Beach State was 14/41 (.341), 5/24, (.208), and 10/15, (.667). For the season we are .524/.307/.702 and our opponents are .376/.250/.652. 21 of our 29 baskets were assisted, (72%), vs. 15 of Long Beach State‘s 19, (79%).

POP: I’ll credit the Axeman for naming this. A common stat is “points in the paint”. But what about the points outside the paint? The game gets a lot harder if you have to plow through the defense to get to the basket to score. Jump shots, (and not just three pointers), are an important part of any team’s offense. You can’t rely on them too much as they are the most inconsistent part of the game but you have to have the capacity to score over the defense or else you are likely to struggle. The formula is simple: Total points minus points in the paint minus free throws.

We scored 84 points in this game, 36 in the paint and 16 from the line so he had 32 POP in this game, or 38%. Long Beach State had 25 POP, or 47.2%. We averaged 26 POP last year, 36% of our points. So far this year we are again averaging 26 POP, 32% of our scoring. Our opponents have averaged 22 POP, but that’s been 38% of their scoring.

The “Offensive Dude of the Game”, (points + assists) was Michael Carter-Williams with 15 points and 10 assists for a total of 25. So far the following players have been “Offensive Dudes”: Michael Carter-Williams (4), James Southerland (2) and Brandon Triche (1).

Rebounding: Syracuse had 19 offensive and 34 defensive rebounds. Long Beach State had 14 offensive and 25 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 43% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 29% of the time. Long Beach State had 18 turnovers, of which 8 were Syracuse steals, (44%). Syracuse had 13 turnovers of which 6 were Long Beach State steals, (46%). We had 71 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). Long Beach State had 52. We are an average of +14 MP for the year.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 71 FGA minus 19 offensive rebounds plus 13 turnovers plus 47.5% of 21 free throws = 74.975 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 75 possessions in which we scored 84 points or 1.120 points per possession. We are 1.088 on the season. Last season it was 1.126. Our offense really isn’t quite performing at full capacity yet.

Long Beach State: 65-14+18 plus 47.5% of 15 = 76.125 possessions. Let’s call that 76 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 53 points or 0.697 points per possession. They are 0.753 on the season. Last season it was 0.927.

I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 20-12, 29-17, 19-13, 16-11. For the year, the average score per quarter is 19-13, 18-11.5, 21-14, 23-17. Last year the averages per quarter were: 19-13, 19-12, 21-14, 22-16. We’ve missed the 15 point mark 4 times in 24 quarters this year and lost 5 quarters, the first three of them by a single point.
