Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.

Michael Carter-Williams +35NP in 26M season: +161NP in 248M per 40M: +26.0NP
James Southerland +15NP in 19M season: +115NP in 191M per 40M: +24.1NP
Rakeem Christmas +14NP in 18M season: +87NP in 162M per 40M: +21.5NP
Baye Moussa Keita +8NP in 15M season: +66NP in 129M per 40M: +20.5NP
CJ Fair +23NP in 26M season: +95NP in 198M per 40M: +19.2NP
Brandon Triche +19NP in 29M season: +102NP in 241M per 40M: +16.9NP
DaJuan Coleman +13NP in 25M season: +56NP in 146M per 40M: +15.3NP
Jerami Grant 0NP in 15M season: +34NP in 95M per 40M: +14.3NP
Trevor Cooney +16NP in 20M season: +39NP in 124M per 40M: +12.6NP

Comment: I don’t keep records of individual games but MCW’s 35NP has to be one of the highest totals since I’ve been figuring this. We have to remember that it was against Monmouth, not Georgetown but Mike seems the “Real deal“ . Trevor Cooney’s improvement now gives us all nine players in double figures. In fact all nine players are averaging at least 12.6NP per forty. Those numbers will come down as the oppositoon gets better but we still have real depth here.
The following players have led the team in net points in a game this year: Michael Carter-Williams (3), CJ Fair and James Southerland (2) and Brandon Triche (1).

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 21/52, (.596) from inside the arc, 11/30 from outside, (.367) and 13/27 from the line (.481). Monmouth was 16/46 (.348), 5/20, (.250), and 9/15, (.600). For the season we are .535/.318/.672 and our opponents are .372/.250/.647. 30 of our 42 baskets were assisted, (71%), vs. 12 of Monmouth‘s 21, (57%).

POP: I’ll credit the Axeman for naming this. A common stat is “points in the paint”. But what about the points outside the paint? The game gets a lot harder if you have to plow through the defense to get to the basket to score. Jump shots, (and not just three pointers), are an important part of any team’s offense. You can’t rely on them too much as they are the most inconsistent part of the game but you have to have the capacity to score over the defense or else you are likely to struggle. The formula is simple: Total points minus points in the paint minus free throws.
We scored 108 points in this game, 58 in the paint and 13 from the line so he had 37 POP in this game, or 34%. Monmouth had 23 POP, or 41%. We averaged 28 POP last year, 33% of our points. So far this year we are again averaging 22 POP, 39% of our scoring. Our opponents have averaged 22 POP, but that’s been 38% of their scoring.

The “Offensive Dude of the Game”, (points + assists) was Michael Carter-Williams with 15 points and 16 assists for a total of 31. So far the following players have been “Offensive Dudes”: Michael Carter-Williams (5), James Southerland (2) and Brandon Triche (1).

Rebounding: Syracuse had 25 offensive and 38 defensive rebounds. Monmouth had 12 offensive and 26 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 49% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 24% of the time. Monmouth had 21 turnovers, of which 12 were Syracuse steals, (57%). Syracuse had 15 turnovers of which 12 were Monmouth steals, (80%). We had 84 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). Monmouth had 53. That difference of +31 is the most I can remember. We are an average of +16 MP for the year.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 82 FGA minus 25 offensive rebounds plus 15 turnovers plus 47.5% of 27 free throws = 84.825 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 84 possessions in which we scored 108 points or 1.286 points per possession. We are 1.115 on the season. Last season it was 1.126. Our offense really isn’t quite performing at full capacity yet.

Monmouth: 66-12+21 plus 47.5% of 15 = 82.125 possessions. Let’s call that 83 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 56 points or 0.675 points per possession. They are 0.759 on the season. Last season it was 0.927.

I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 24-19, 33-9, 38-16, 13-12. For the year, the average score per quarter is 20-13.5, 21-12, 23-13, 21-15.5. Last year the averages per quarter were: 19-13, 19-12, 21-14, 22-16. We’ve missed the 15 point mark 5 times in 32 quarters this year and lost 5 quarters, the first three of them by a single point.

I rarely post on these but I always read them and appreciate the effort. Thanks
