Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.

CJ Fair +25NP in 38M season: +136NP in 302M per 40M: +18.0NP
Baye Moussa Keita +13NP in 24M season: +89NP in 173M per 40M: +20.6NP
Brandon Triche +11NP in 39M season: +126NP in 343M per 40M: +14.7NP
James Southerland +8NP in 32M season: +171NP in 286M per 40M: +23.9NP
Rakeem Christmas +3NP in 17M season: +110NP in 219M per 40M: +20.1NP
Jerami Grant 0NP in 5M season: +37NP in 119M per 40M: +12.4NP
Trevor Cooney -2NP in 8M season: +38NP in 155M per 40M: +9.8NP
DaJuan Coleman -1NP in 17M season: +67NP in 196M per 40M: +13.7NP
Michael Carter-Williams -3NP in 33M season: +191NP in 353M per 40M: +21.6NP

Comment: We had four players who had 0NP or worse in this game We had only three guys playing well in this game and for Triche it was only for the first 7 minutes. I’ve always said that if 1-2 guys play well, we’ll probably lose. If 3-4 guys play well, we’ll probably win. If more than that play well, we’ll blow them out. After the first 7 minutes, we were at the 1-2 level.

The following players have led the team in net points in a game this year: James Southerland (4) Michael Carter-Williams and CJ Fair (3) and Brandon Triche (1).

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 27/53, (.509) from inside the arc, 2/12 from outside, (.167) and 19/34 from the line (.559). Temple was 15/35 (.429), 8/24, (.333), and 29/36, (.806). For the season we are .532/.330/.649 and our opponents are .395/.271/.686. 10 of our 29 baskets were assisted, (34%), vs. 15 of Temple‘s 23, (65%).

POP: I’ll credit the Axeman for naming this. A common stat is “points in the paint”. But what about the points outside the paint? The game gets a lot harder if you have to plow through the defense to get to the basket to score. Jump shots, (and not just three pointers), are an important part of any team’s offense. You can’t rely on them too much as they are the most inconsistent part of the game but you have to have the capacity to score over the defense or else you are likely to struggle. The formula is simple: Total points minus points in the paint minus free throws.
We scored 79 points in this game, 44 in the paint and 19 from the foul line. Thus we had 16 POP, or 20% of our points. Temple had 24 POP, or 29%. We averaged 28 POP last year, 33% of our points. So far this year we are again averaging 27 POP, 33% of our scoring. Our opponents have averaged 24 POP, but that’s been 39% of their scoring.

The “Offensive Dude of the Game”, (points + assists) was CJ Fair with 25 points and 0 assists for a total of 25. So far the following players have been “Offensive Dudes”: Michael Carter-Williams (6), James Southerland (3), Brandon Triche and CJ Fair (1).

Rebounding: Syracuse had 19 offensive and 22 defensive rebounds. Temple had 19 offensive and 25 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 43% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 46% of the time. For the year we have rebounded 41% of our misses and the opposition have rebounded 33% of theirs. We’ve out-rebounded 8 of 11 opponents by this measure. Temple had 14turnovers, of which 7 were Syracuse steals, (50.0%). Syracuse had 11 turnovers of which 4 were Temple steals, (36%). We had 55 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). Temple had 55. We are an average of +13 MP for the year.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 65 FGA minus 19 offensive rebounds plus 11 turnovers plus 47.5% of 34 free throws = 73.15 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 73 possessions in which we scored 79 points or 1.082 points per possession. We are 1.123 on the season. Last season it was 1.126.

Temple: 59-8+14 plus 47.5% of 36 = 71.1 possessions. Let’s call that 72 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 83 points or 1.153 points per possession. They are 0.774 on the season. Last season it was 0.830.

I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 21-14, 19-24, 19-24, 20-21. Even though we didn’t score in the last 5:36, the real problem was the easy baskets we were giving up on the other end because of turnovers and fouls on rebound attempts. For the year, the average score per quarter is 20-14, 20-13, 22-15, 21-17. Last year the averages per quarter were: 19-13, 19-12, 21-14, 22-16. We’ve missed the 15 point mark 6 times in 32 quarters this year and lost 10 quarters, including the last three of this game.
