Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.

Comment: I’ve always said that if 1-2 guys play well, we’ll probably lose. If 3-4 guys play well, we’ll probably win. If more than that play well, we’ll blow them out. Yesterday two guys played well. Fortunately we were playing Alcorn State. At least Cooney’s mini-explosion gut him back to 10+ NP per 40 so the whole team is back to that level. Actually, they are all 11+.

The following players have led, (or tied for the lead), the team in net points in a game this year: CJ Fair and James Southerland (4) Michael Carter-Williams (3) and Trevor Cooney and Brandon Triche (1).

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 18/41, (.439) from inside the arc, 3/15 from outside, (.200) and 12/28 from the line (.429). Alcorn State was an amazing 11/15 (.733) from inside the arc, 3/17, (.176), and 5/11, (.455)- the two teams missed 22 of 39 free throws. For the season we are .524/.322/.629 and our opponents are .407/.265/.674. 10 of our 21 baskets were assisted, (48%), vs. 10 of Alcorn State‘s 14, (71%). The most important stats in basketball is two point field goal percentage and it’s rare for the other team to have a higher percentage than we do. In this game, it wasn’t close. Shoot 73% in side the arc vs. Syracuse???

POP: I’ll credit the Axeman for naming this. A common stat is “points in the paint”. But what about the points outside the paint? The game gets a lot harder if you have to plow through the defense to get to the basket to score. Jump shots, (and not just three pointers), are an important part of any team’s offense. You can’t rely on them too much as they are the most inconsistent part of the game but you have to have the capacity to score over the defense or else you are likely to struggle. The formula is simple: Total points minus points in the paint minus free throws.
We scored 57 points in this game, 32 in the paint and 12 from the foul line. Thus we had 13 POP, or 23% of our points. Alcorn State also had 13 POP, or 36%. We averaged 28 POP last year, 33% of our points. So far this year we are again averaging 26 POP, 32% of our scoring. Our opponents have averaged 24 POP, but that’s been 39% of their scoring.

The “Offensive Dude of the Game”, (points + assists) was CJ Fair with 13 points and 0 assists for a total of 13. So far the following players have been “Offensive Dudes”: Michael Carter-Williams (6), James Southerland (3), CJ Fair (2) and Brandon Triche (1).

Possession: Syracuse had 21 offensive and 18 defensive rebounds. Alcorn State had 5 offensive and 23 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 48% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 22% of the time. And Alcorn was not a short team. For the year we have rebounded 42% of our misses and the opposition have rebounded 32% of theirs. We’ve out-rebounded 9 of 12 opponents by this measure. Alcorn State had 28 turnovers, of which 13 were Syracuse steals, (46.4%). Syracuse had 15 turnovers of which 7 were Alcorn State steals, (47%). We had 67 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). Alcorn State had 43. We are an average of +14 MP for the year.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 565 FGA minus 21 offensive rebounds plus 15 turnovers plus 47.5% of 28 free throws = 63.3 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 62 possessions in which we scored 57 points or 0.919 points per possession. We are 1.109 on the season. Last season it was 1.126.

Alcorn State: 32-5+28 plus 47.5% of 11 = 60.225 possessions. Let’s call that 62 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 36 points or 0.581 points per possession. They are 0.813 on the season. Last season it was 0.830.

I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 19-10, 13-6, 9-13, 16-7. For the year, the average score per quarter is 20-13, 19.5-13, 21-14, 20-16. Last year the averages per quarter were: 19-13, 19-12, 21-14, 22-16. We’ve missed the 15 point mark 8 times in 48 quarters this year, and lost 12.
