Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.
Brandon Triche +34NP in 31M season: +162NP in 426M per 40M: +15.2NP
CJ Fair +16NP in 34M season: +189NP in 409M per 40M: +18.5NP
Michael Carter-Williams +15NP in 37M season: +243NP in 451M per 40M: +21.6NP
James Southerland +11NP in 25M season: +191NP in 352M per 40M: +21.7NP
Baye Moussa Keita +6NP in 13M season: +100NP in 208M per 40M: +19.2NP
Rakeem Christmas +6NP in 22M season: +138NP in 287M per 40M: +19.2NP
Jerami Grant +3NP in 14M season: +50NP in 169M per 40M: +11.8NP
DaJuan Coleman 0NP in 9M season: +83NP in 233M per 40M: +14.2NP
Trevor Cooney -2NP in 10M season: +50NP in 210M per 40M: +9.5NP
Comment: Cooney again slipped back to under 10.0NP. I’m not sure how much that matters but the list is less aesthetic that way.

The following players have led, (or tied for the lead), the team in net points in a game this year: Michael Carter-Williams, CJ Fair and James Southerland (4), Brandon Triche (2). and Trevor Cooney.

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 19/39, (.487) from inside the arc, 9/22 from outside, (.409) and 13/18 from the line (.722). Rutgers was 14/37 (.378) from inside the arc, 6/18, (.333), and 7/8, (.875). For the season we are .524/.339/.633 and our opponents are .403/.268/.687. 20 of our 28 baskets were assisted, (71%), vs. 14 of Rutgers‘ 20, (70%).

POP: I’ll credit the Axeman for naming this. A common stat is “points in the paint”. But what about the points outside the paint? The game gets a lot harder if you have to plow through the defense to get to the basket to score. Jump shots, (and not just three pointers), are an important part of any team’s offense. You can’t rely on them too much as they are the most inconsistent part of the game but you have to have the capacity to score over the defense or else you are likely to struggle. The formula is simple: Total points minus points in the paint minus free throws.
We scored 78 points in this game, 34 in the paint and 13 from the foul line. Thus we had 31 POP, or 40% of our points. Rutgers had 220 POP, or 41.5%. We averaged 28 POP last year, 33% of our points. So far this year we are again averaging 24 POP, 30% of our scoring. Our opponents have averaged 23 POP, but that’s been 40% of their scoring.

The “Offensive Dude of the Game”, (points + assists) was Brandon Triche with 25 points and 6 assists for a total of 31. So far the following players have been “Offensive Dudes”: Michael Carter-Williams (7), James Southerland (3), CJ Fair and Brandon Triche (2).

Possession: Syracuse had 9 offensive and 25 defensive rebounds. Rutgers had 10 offensive and 28 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 37% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 35% of the time. (I just heard Mike Lindsley say that we “got killed on the offensive boards”). For the year we have rebounded 41% of our misses and the opposition have rebounded 30% of theirs. We’ve out-rebounded 11 of 14 opponents by this measure. Rutgers had 20 turnovers, of which 11 were Syracuse steals, (55%). Syracuse had 9 turnovers of which 4 were Rutgers steals, (44%). We had 54 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). Rutgers had 47. We are an average of +13.5 MP for the year.
And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 61 FGA minus 9 offensive rebounds plus 9 turnovers plus 47.5% of 18 free throws = 69.55 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 70 possessions in which we scored 78 points or 1.114 points per possession. We are 1.111 on the season. Last season it was 1.126.

Rutgers: 55-10+20 plus 47.5% of 8 = 68.8 possessions. Let’s call that 69 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 53 points or 0.768 points per possession. They are 0.812 on the season. Last season it was 0.830.

I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 18-16, 21-4, 25-17, 14-16. For the year, the average score per quarter is 20-13, 20-12, 22-15, 20-17. Last year the averages per quarter were: 19-13, 19-12, 21-14, 22-16. We’ve missed the 15 point mark 9 times in 56 quarters this year, and lost 14.

(Some of the season numbers may have changed a bit beyond what this game changed them because I double checked them against the official seasonal stats on the SU Athletics website. I also re-did the seasonal possessions based on the total FGA, o-rebs, turnovers and FTA for the year.)
