Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.

CJ Fair +28NP in 38M season: +228NP in 486M per 40M: +18.8NP
Michael Carter-Williams +24NP in 38M season: +272NP in 527M per 40M: +20.6NP
Rakeem Christmas +20NP in 38M season: +162NP in 347M per 40M: +18.7NP
James Southerland +11NP in 38M season: +218NP in 420M per 40M: +20.8NP
Brandon Triche 0NP in 39M season: +182NP in 505M per 40M: +14.4NP
Jerami Grant -1NP in 2M season: +52NP in 179M per 40M: +11.6NP
DaJuan Coleman -1NP in 2M season: +81NP in 240M per 40M: +13.5NP
Trevor Cooney -2NP in 3M season: +49NP in 215M per 40M: +9.1NP
Baye Moussa Keita -3NP in 2M season: +94NP in 226M per 40M: +16.6NP

Comment: Five guys played 191 of 200 minutes in this game. That can’t continue. But three of the five played arguably their best games of the season.

The following players have led, (or tied for the lead), the team in net points in a game this year: Michael Carter-Williams, CJ Fair and James Southerland (4), Brandon Triche (2). and Trevor Cooney.

Shooting Breakdown: SU was 23/41, (.561) from inside the arc, 3/21 from outside, (.143) and 17/18 from the line (.944). Providence was 12/32 (.375) from inside the arc, 9/18, (.500) from outside, and 15/23, (.652). For the season we are .519/.320/.644 and our opponents are .407/.280/.681. 14 of our 26 baskets were assisted, (54%), vs. 15 of Providence‘s 21, (71%).

POP: I’ll credit the Axeman for naming this. A common stat is “points in the paint”. But what about the points outside the paint? The game gets a lot harder if you have to plow through the defense to get to the basket to score. Jump shots, (and not just three pointers), are an important part of any team’s offense. You can’t rely on them too much as they are the most inconsistent part of the game but you have to have the capacity to score over the defense or else you are likely to struggle. The formula is simple: Total points minus points in the paint minus free throws.

We scored 72 points in this game, 46 in the paint and 17 from the foul line. Thus we had 9 POP, or 12.5% of our points. (in the notorious game at Louisville last year we had 5 POP, 10% of our points). Providence had 27 POP, or 41%. We averaged 28 POP last year, 33% of our points. So far this year we are again averaging 23 POP, (only 18 away from the Dome), 29% of our scoring. Our opponents have also averaged 23 POP, but that’s been 40% of their scoring.

The “Offensive Dude of the Game”, (points + assists) was a tie between CJ Fair and Michael Carter Williams who had very different lines of 23 points, 0 assists and 17 points, 6 assists. There’s general agreement that MCW should have been credited with many more assists than that, (a point is a point but an assist is an opinion), but it goes into the books as a tie. So far the following players have been “Offensive Dudes”: Michael Carter-Williams (8), James Southerland, Brandon Triche and CJ Fair (3).

Possession: Syracuse had 18 offensive and 23 defensive rebounds. Providence had 9 offensive and 23 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 50% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 28% of the time. For the year we have rebounded 43% of our misses and the opposition has rebounded 30% of theirs. We’ve out-rebounded 12 of 16 opponents by this measure, (San Diego State, Canisius, Temple and Alcorn State beat us on the boards). Providence had 12 turnovers, of which 8 were Syracuse steals, (67%). Syracuse had 10 turnovers of which 4 were Providence steals, (40%). We had 53 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). Providence had 37. We are an average of +14 MP for the year.

And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:

Syracuse: 62 FGA minus 18 offensive rebounds plus 10 turnovers plus 47.5% of 18 free throw attempts = 62.55 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 63 possessions in which we scored 72 points or 1.143 points per possession. We are 1.108 on the season. (It’s interesting that in a game where we were 3 for 21 from the arc and hit no two pointers outside the paint, our offensive efficiency was above our seasonal average.) Last season it was 1.126.

Providence: 50-9+12 plus 47.5% of 23 = 63.925 possessions. Let’s call that 64 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 66 points or 1.031 points per possession. They are 0.818 on the season. Last season it was 0.830.

I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 19-18, 11-15, 19-19, 23-14. For the year, the average score per quarter is 19-14, 19-12, 21-15, 19-16. Last year the averages per quarter were: 19-13, 19-12, 21-14, 22-16. We’ve missed the 15 point mark 12 times in 64 quarters this year, and lost 16.
