Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes:
Kris Joseph +22NP in 39M season: +66NP in 127M per 40M: +20.8
Brandon Triche +20NP in 34M season: +47NP in 105M per 40M: +17.9
CJ Fair +14NP in 31M season: +60NP in 108M per 40M: +22.2
Fab Melo +8NP in 25M season: +30NP in 100M per 40M: +12.0
Dion Waiters +7NP in 25M season: +58NP in 102M per 40M: +22.7
Scoop Jardine +3NP in 20M season: +30NP in 85M per 40M: +14.1
James Southerland 0NP in 6M season: +74NP in 89M per 40M: +33.3
Rakeem Christmas 0NP in 3M season: +25NP in 77M per 40M: +13.0
Michael Carter-Williams 0NP in 2M season: +21NP in 77M per 40M: +10.9
Mookie Jones 0NP in 0M season: -3NP in 27M per 40M: -4.4
Baye Moussa Keita -2NP in 15M season: +35NP in 64M per 40M: +21.9
Comment: The top five guys are clearly our best line-up so far, even if two of them don’t start. Like JB says, it’s not who starts, it’s who finishes. Note the minutes played. James Southerland’s early success vs. the bad teams didn’t translate into this game. He like everybody else has to show the coach something to stay in there. In the last two games Keita has played 30 minutes and taken no shots after going 6 for 6 and scoring 14 points in 14 minutes vs. Albany.
Shooting Breakdown: SU was 21/43 from inside the arc, (.488: we are.511 for the season), 7/15 from outside, (.467) and 6/8 from the line (.750). Virginia Tech was 12/28 (.429), 8/19, (.421) and 10/12, (.833). 17 of our 28 baskets were assisted, (61%), vs. 15 of Virginia Tech’s 20, (75%).
Rebounding: Syracuse had 12 offensive and 31 defensive rebounds. Virginia Tech had 8 offensive and 28 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 39% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 29% of the time. Virginia Tech had 16 turnovers, of which 8 were Syracuse steals, (50%). Syracuse had 9 turnovers of which 5 were Virginia Tech steals, (56%). We had 48 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 36.
And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:
Syracuse: 58 FGA minus 12 offensive rebounds plus 9 turnovers plus 47.5% of 8 free throws = 58.800 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 59 possessions in which we scored 69 points or 1.169 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.215.
Virginia Tech: 47-8+16 plus 47.5% of 12= 60.700 possessions. Let’s call that 60 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 58 points or 0.967 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.821.
Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 11-15, 16-14, 23-16, 19-13. The first quarter of this game was our first sub 15 minute quarter of the season and only the second quarter we’ve lost.
