Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.
Kris Joseph +19NP in 36M season: +85NP in 163M per 40M: +20.9
Fab Melo +13NP in 32M season: +43NP in 132M per 40M: +13.0
CJ Fair +12NP in 35M season: +72NP in 143M per 40M: +20.1
Brandon Triche +10NP in 27M season: +57NP in 132M per 40M: +17.3
Scoop Jardine +8NP in 27M season: +38NP in 112M per 40M: +13.6
Dion Waiters +7NP in 24M season: +65NP in 126M per 40M: +20.6
Rakeem Christmas 0NP in 4M season: +25NP in 81M per 40M: +12.3
James Southerland 0NP in 7M season: +74NP in 96M per 40M: +30.8
Mookie Jones 0NP in 0M season: -3NP in 27M per 40M: -4.4
Michael Carter-Williams -3NP in 2M season: +18NP in 79M per 40M: +9.1
Baye Moussa Keita -4NP in 6M season: +31NP in 70M per 40M: +17.7
Comment: Our bench in these games has basically been Fair and Waiters. Will Christmas, Keita, Southerland and Carter-Williams be factors in the important games this season? Their total NP in these two games was -9.
Shooting Breakdown: SU was 23/46 from inside the arc, (.500-13 for 18 in the second half after 10 for 28 in the first: we are.542 for the season), 5/45 from outside, (.357) and 8/15 from the line (.533). Stanford was 17/38 (.447), 7/18, (.389) and 8/15, (.533). 15 of our 28 baskets were assisted, (54%), vs. 10 of Stanford’s 21, (48%).
Rebounding: Syracuse had 16 offensive and 18 defensive rebounds. Stanford had 18 offensive and 18 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 47% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 50% of the time, (both very high percentages). Stanford had 24 turnovers, of which 19 were Syracuse steals, (79%). Syracuse had 21 turnovers of which 10 were Stanford steals, (48%). We had 58 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 57. This is the first game in which we didn’t have an advantage of at least +12.
And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:
Syracuse: 60 FGA minus 16 offensive rebounds plus 21 turnovers plus 47.5% of 15 free throws = 72.125 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 71 possessions in which we scored 69 points or 0.972 points per possession. For the season it’s 1.175.
Stanford: 56-18+24 plus 47.5% of 15= 69.125 possessions. Let’s call that 70 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 63 points or 0.900 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.834.
Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 9-10, 15-15, 21-21, 24-17. The first quarter of this game was our second sub 15 minute quarter of the season and only the third quarter, (of 24), we’ve lost.
