Take all the positives: points, rebounds, assists, steals and blocks and subtract the negatives: missed field goals, miss free throws, turnovers and fouls. The result is “Net Points.” (NP). M = minutes.

Comment: James Southerland has 97 net points in five games at the Dome and 0 net points in the two games away from it.
Shooting Breakdown: SU was 19/34 from inside the arc, (.559-we are.544 for the season), 13/30 from outside, (.433) and 7/10 from the line (.700). Eastern Michigan was 12/32 (.375), 5/17, (.294). and 9/11, (.818) 21 of our 32 baskets were assisted, (66%), vs. 12 of Eastern Michigan’s 17, (71%).
Rebounding: Syracuse had 17 offensive and 20 defensive rebounds. Eastern Michigan had 13 offensive and 17 defensive rebounds. That means that when we missed, we got the rebound 50% of the time. When they missed, they got the rebound 39% of the time. Eastern Michigan had 17 turnovers, of which 13 were Syracuse steals, (76%). Syracuse had 6 turnovers of which 4 were Eastern Michigan steals, (67%). We had 54 “manufactured” possessions, (our rebounds + their turnovers). They had 36.
And, thanks to Blacksquirrels and Knicks411, I now understand how to compute “points per possession, (field goal attempts – offensive rebounds + turnovers plus 47.5% of free throws attempted) and here they are:
Syracuse: 64 FGA minus 17 offensive rebounds plus 6 turnovers plus 47.5% of 10 free throws = 57.756 possessions. The possessions can’t be more than one off so I’ll call that 58 possessions in which we scored 84 points or 1.448 points per possession. (That’s astronomical but I double-checked it- it’s largely due to the 13 treys and shooting 56% inside the arc.) For the season it’s 1.207.
Eastern Michigan: 49-13+17 plus 47.5% of 11= 58.225 possessions. Let’s call that 58 possessions, (so we won’t be more than one off) in which they scored 48 points or 0.828 points per possession. For the season it’s 0.833.
Dry stretches were a problem last year- we’d go 8-10 minutes with the offense not functioning. I decided it should be a goal to score at least 15 points in every 10 minute “quarter” of the game, (college is the only level that doesn’t have quarters). You want to score more than that, of course, but if we can avoid falling under 15 in any ten minute period we should have a good scoring average because we’ll have 20 and 25 point quarters as well. The “quarterly” splits in this game were 16-17, 16-7, 27-13, 25-11. We’ve had only two sub 15 point quarters this year and lost only four of them (of 28). But three of those four and the two sub 15 quarters have been I the first quarters of the last three games.
