What a wildly weird and horrifying day that was. Was in college at the time. Had class that morning, and it was during that hour that the planes struck. Didn't find out about it until about 10 minutes after class, and thought I was living through a nightmare

I left the Air Force a year and a half before 9/11. The family was settled in our new house and my wife and I were in our respective jobs, the kids in school, and we had returned to civilian life in the Syracuse area.

I returned home from work that fateful September day, walked in the door, my wife then greeted me with one word, "No".

All of my brothers and sisters who have served will know why she said that.

To the fallen and to those who lost a family member or friend, my heart is with you. Never forget.

I was in month 3 of a 4 month basic training (Army) at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. We had just gotten done with our 12 mile road march and night infiltration course the night before, we were allowed to sleep in (which meant 0600 wake up) and we were in tennis shoes, shinning out boots, because our boots and feet were a mess from the night before. All the Drill Sergeants showed up at once and told us to go to our "Kill Zones" or our office big enough to hold the platoon. We were told to turn on the TV which we all thought was a trick because we never could watch TV. Ill never forget this linebacker of a guy (my DS) looking at us and said "You all get to call home today and tell mommy, we are going to war!!!). A brand new awakening happened that day for the people who joined the Army for weekend BBQ and college money, that was for sure. 19 years later, Active Duty, still feels like yesterday.
