I guess I didnt think about this. With the ncaa adding a year to college athletes it limits the amount of room left for kids coming out of high school. Some kids might not get a chance to play in college because of this.

It will be interesting to see how it plays out

1. While returning (graduate) seniors won’t count against the scholarship limits, it doesn’t mean a school has to expand their roster to take on more players next year if they have 5th year seniors
2. The transfer portal frenzy is allowing teams to fill their rosters from a new source of players, so they may opt to pursue transfers first over high school players.
3. Regardless of whether they fill their roster from transfers, graduates, or high school players, the games will still only be 40 minutes long and they only play 30+ games, so the total available minutes is the same. You have more kids fighting for the same fixed amount of playing time, so many kids will ultimately play less.

Not sure if it will happen, but I wouldn’t be shocked if the NCAA adds a few more games for each team next year (late October start) to allow for more playing time, but ultimately for the schools to make up for some lost revenue over the past year.

I thought they wouldn’t count toward scholarship limits.
Seniors who stay at their current school do not count to the 13 scholarship limit.
If Marek or Bourama transfered to another school it would count to their 13 limit.

It’s to incentivize kids to stay at their current school and get an actual senior year ceremony if they stay.

So in theory, if the entire team returned (plus transfers in), we would have 15 scholarship players, counting for only 13 scholarships:

G) Richmond, Boeheim, Girard, Torrence
) Griffin, Guerrier, Dolezaj, Braswell, Newton, Swider, Williams
C) Sidibe, Edwards, Anselem, Bol Ajak,

As of right now the roster stands at:

G) Boeheim, Girard, Torrence
) Griffin, Guerrier, Dolezaj, Newton, Swider, Williams
C) Sidibe, Edwards, Anselem

Waiting on these guys. If we have extra room I assume Owens gets his scholarship back.

Oh I didnt realize that

One thing you are right about is that presumably these 5th year seniors will collectively eat up minutes that would have otherwise been distributed throuought their teams, some to freshmen and sophomores. Those players will likely see fewer minutes as a result (generalizing across all of D1 here). As a result of that, there will no doubt be a larg number of transfers of underclassmen next year as the shortsighted nature of these decisions perpetuates.
