2017 Capsules Coastals 12, Americans 3 A combination of stout goalie play and unselfish offense led the ACC Coastals team to a 12-3 victory over the America East Americans in both teams’opening games. Among the more notable offensive performances for the Coastals was that of North Carolina commit Alex Trippi, who started the scoring with a goal just shy of three minutes in and finished with two goals and one assist. Fellow Tar Heel commit Sean Morris had a goal and an assist while Owen Seebold (Syracuse) had a hat trick. LSM Jacob Walthour (Syracuse) scored two. But it was strength in numbers — and perhaps the luck of the Irish — that saw the Coastals overcome an otherwise immense performance from Americans goalie Will Ramos (Albany), who finished with 12 saves. The Coastals had eight different players register a goal, with Notre Dame commits Michael Fay, Michael Drake, Jake Frane, and John Ryan Hallenbeck rounding out the Coastals scorers. Despite the scoreline, the Americans competed well, particularly at the face-off X, but couldn’t overcome a strong start from Coastal goalie Alexander Rode (Virginia), who was lights out between the pipes and finished with six saves in the first half. Matthew Schmidt (Notre Dame) also had a solid half with three saves. Luke Postiglione (Hartford), Connor Wolff (Stony Brook), and Steven Ramirez (Albany) were the scorers for the Americans. It was an even game offensively for the Coastals. Connor Morin (Notre Dame), one of the summer’s rising stars, and midfielder John Ryan Hallenbeck (Notre Dame) led the team with a combined six points. Hallenback scored two goals and an assist, while Morin, quarterbacking the offense, notched a goal and two assists. Ian Laviano (Virginia) added two goals. Owen Seebold (Syracuse) scored the Coastals’ game-winning goal off an assist from Jackson Appelt (Virginia) with three minutes left, both their only points in the game. Michael Drake (Notre Dame) also scored once. Coastal goalie Alexander Rode (Virginia) locked down the cage in the second half, making six saves. Midfielder Harrison Bardwell (Cornell) led the Ancients with two goals, including notching the last score of the game on a righty run. Four other players scored for the Ancients. Goalie Jake Simon (Brown) played well in the second half, making five saves. Defenseman Frankie Tangredi (Harvard) was also a factor for the Ivies, forcing turnovers and serving as a crucial piece of the clearing game.
