Kickoffs will now take place from the 35-yard line, and a touchback will come out to the 25-yard line.

This is HUGE news, especially for Syracuse football. This will not only help our defense tremendously (assuming the new KO guy can boot it 66+ yards consistently), but how many times did we start inside the 20 last year after opponent scores?

Although, if our new guy really has a canon for a leg, we'll be losing 5 yards on each touchback.

But the 25 yard line is a lot better than the 40 or 45 which is where our opponents seem to have started from last season.

I for one would love to have us and our opponents both basically start on the 25 yard line. Evens things out for us in comparison to our recent seasons. Puts less emphasis on kickoff coverage and the kick return game, both of which are areas we struggled in last year. Less entertaining as far as the game of football goes but good news for the Orange.

people act like all the teams but us kicked into the end zone last year. it levels the playing field..

last year we kicked mostly to around the 5. not only are the kickers kicking closer the players are running 5 less yards. the ideal would be kicks that either cant be returned or are marginal and high enough they have to be returned and you can cover them.

if your kicker can kick it thru the endzone just do it. but if he is good enough to now kick the goal line with hang time thats when you can use him the best.

and dont over look the other aspect of the kickoff change.. the 5 yard runup limit will be huge on onside kicks.. kids will not have that big head start to get across the 10 yds and blow the plays up for the receiving team..

I'm not sure I get your point?

Seem huge, but I wonder. Could this have been an area of improvement for us as we finally recruited a stronger legged kicker and were building the necessary depth to be a better coverage team? And will this remove opportunities for a guy like Kobena who I think is going to be an above average KO returner?

Short term it's probably good. But more than anything I wish these rules were in place for the past couple seasons. Can they make them retroactive and resimulate the UConn game?

Don't count on it helping our field position. Based on history our returner will take it four yards deep in the end zone and get tackled at the 19 and won't learn not to do this until week eight or nine.

next step is to get rid of the kickoff and just get on with it at the 25 yard line

then get rid of extra points and just get on with the game

we can still have punters, i don't want them eliminated by rules, i just want coaches to get a little smarter and use them less.

Yeah, let's take the foot out of football! :)
I guess, as a previous poster has written, the best technique will be to kick it high and drop it right at the goal line. Let them think about whether to return it or not.

Yup, this would have been a great rule change for LAST year.

In the long run making specials even will only hurt those teams that count on them as an equalizer. Im not sure that we were ever going to be good on specials with the lack of emphasis we have placed so i guess it is a good thing for us.

When you kick the ball out of bounds like SU does on a consistent basis this rule change has little effect. lol

All joking aside, just kick it deep, down the middle, and into the endzone. That is the wise play. No risk of kicking out of bounds and the high percentage play is letting them start from the 25. The 5 extra yards added to the touchback means nothing.

Do we have a kicker who from the 35 can place it in the endzone, that's another story.

That's the expectation/hope by bringing in Ryan Norton.
