That's just how NYS rolls. Stupid, short-sighted thinking, always trying to figure out how to benefit the politically connected at the expense of doing what is simple and straightforward. Another example: medical marijuana market - we are down to only 1 dispensary in the Syracuse area, and so the price is now $200 for a THC cartridge. It used to be "only" $99 when there were 3 places in the area. I can get them for $30-45 each. Used to be I had to go to NYC or Northern NJ, but now I have a guy here in Syracuse. When I renewed my license recently, the lady at the doctor's office said, "I see you haven't made any purchases from a dispensary." I didn't bother answering. The answer is clear. If you price the legal market above what's reasonable, then the illegal market will continue and flourish. Of course they won't pass the legal recreational cannabis market until they figure out how to try to turn it into a monopoly investment for the politically connected. Meanwhile, they will miss their window of opportunity to get all that tax money. It shouldn't be any different to sell marijuana than it is to sell alcohol. It should be regulated through the State Liquor Authority, and it should be exactly the same process to get a license to sell pot as it is to sell beer, wine and liquor.
