Looks like they are trying an end-around via athletics now. The plain truth of the matter is, like Massachusetts, the private universities have far more cache in the state than do the publics. Heck when they did that study of what a state university system should look like in the recent past the panel making recommendations had almost as many private representatives on it as public which rankled SUNY employees to no end.
