Should be our best in years. Crume Zodzilla Sloan Haney on the inside. Bromley Googins Sharpe Juco on the outside with Googins playing at both positions based on situation. RS all of the other incoming players including Manley if he makes it here.

I thought the oft-injured Ollie Haney was a senior this year.

not sure i thought he might have one year left also forgot about Donnie who should contribute on passing downs at DE.

DTs [not distinguishing between NT / DT]

Bromley
Goggins
Crume
Boatman
Sloan
Zian Jones
Welsh

Brantley ***redshirt candidate
Coleman ***redshirt candidate

DEs

Sharpe
Robinson
Simmons
Garrick
Johnson ***pending NCAA approval

Barnwell ***redshirt candidate
Washington ***redshirt candidate -- I project him here, even though he might play OLB

One thing I like is that our depth has balanced out. Schaefer's defense performed well having quality platoon depth, especially on the interior. I'd expect Crume to take a step forward this year, and if players like Sloan / Jones prove to be serviceable rotation guys, we should be better against the run this year.

We need Johnson to get cleared by the NCAA to bookend alongside Sharpe and help improve last year's anemic pass rush. I'm very curious to see what Simmons and Robinson can do. If Garrick has the same type of contribution during his time at SU that Torrey Ball had, I'll be pleased.

If Johnson doesnt clear look for Jay or Googins to get some time at DE this spring

not so sure - there are an awful lot of kids who have

I'm not so sure - there are an awful lot of kids in that list that have never played an actual down for Syracuse. I'm cautiously optimistic, but wouldn't say the best in years at this point. Fingers crossed though.

Look for Brantley to move outside as well...not sure if it will happen but he's athletic enough to play outside...

Not so sure about what? That depth won't be improved?

I agree--lots of new faces [especially at DE], lots of unproven things that need to fall into place.

lather, rinse, repeat...

too many variables in this equation for me to even try and get excited. need to see some consistency from both returning and new players before I get a stiffy over any of our units.

Rob Welsh was a three star recruit, I wouldn't just dismiss his potential.

Haney graduated.

Fixed--added him to the post above.

I actually forgot about him.

IIRC, he didn't look too bad during spring practice. And he looked pretty athletic when on specials this year. Especially after I finally realized he wasn't walk-on kicker Riley Dixon.

I'm also taking a cautious approach however, it is a good thing that we are getting these types of kids to commit as opposed to not even being in the ball game for some of these big kids. Same thing on the O-line side. Who knows about the talent or impact yet but 1 thing is definitely for sure, compared to 2-3 years ago we are getting players that are physically more likely to contribute on both sides of the line.

Is this your new approach? To say postion X 'should be our best in years' so that you can crush Marrone at the end of the year? Your unrealistic expectation is based on what - a gut feel?

We're improving on size in the trenches which is extremely important. I loved Lewis, Perkins, and Tribbey as much as any fan but they were all 6'0 -6'2 & 270 lbs max. Obviously alot of youth and unknowns but Bromley, Goggins, and Sharpe are a solid veteran core and all the guys have higher ceilings than in years past based on size & Strength alone. If Daoust can coach, the DL should be in good shape for years to come.

Agree on your redshirt candidates as well due to needing coaching and weight room work. Also easy to see who may move from DT to DE based on size and speed. Welsh might consider the move and Goggins could see spot time there especially in red zone defense.

Simmons hopefully adds at least 10 lbs by next year but he's still 15-25 lbs from what he should be playing at. He could very well be our 3rd and long pass rush specialist this year though. This guy is an athlete and brings a more speed than we've seen from either Chan or Mikhail.

Not to mention that it's basically impossible to look at that (inaccurate) list of DTs and say it's anything close to our best in years. Haney is gone, Sloan will be 2nd year and has never played a down, Crume is 2nd year has only played sparingly, Zian who knows what you get from him. As we learned from Goggins, JUCOs have big adjustments they aren't always ready to play upon arrival.

Now if you say Goggins, Bromley, Boatman, Crume, Welsh, Sloan, Zian at DT, it sounds a lot better. "Best in years"? Depends how many years, but should certainly hold its own.

As for DE, that's just going to be a problem over the course of a season, can't really help that, Chandler's departure is huge. I like Micah, he should be ready to go, but still green. Sharpe has a lot of experience, not sure how well people think he's played, the dumb things stick out. Simmons may not be ready. JUCO, see above. Can't count on a true freshman to be ready. Which leaves this Bryan Johnson thing that I'm just now getting wind of.

As I look up, I think I just copied RFs edited post, great minds I guess. I started at the last post which is like Cali, except not starting in the middle.

MM really had a disappointing year last year. I know he was hurt and had a solid career...but does anyone think losing MM is a huge deal? Yes losing an experienced player is sometimes tough to overcome, but I for one an exicted about seeing garrick, hopefully manley, simmons, goggins etc line up in that spot and bring more to the table.

On the surface, it is a seriously average unit, at best. Need rapid improvement from at least one of the inside guys (Crume?) and an outside pass rush from someone, anyone?

The coaches will have several candidates to try out at DE but any potential stars? One of the biggest stories entering Spring practices.

First post.

Don't rule out Goggins at the DE position. If I'm not mistaken he is the fastest and strongest on the Dline. With our depth at DT I'm sure we'll see him at DE. Not to mention the article from Nolan when Deon first arrived with Marrone moving Deon to DE because of the trouble he gave 1st team oline while playing DE on scout team. IMO that would be smart move the guy will be far more aggressive than chandler or MM was on the outsiders faster, creating a better pass rush while the middle will be plugged by bigger guys such as Sloan zjones bromely and boatman

Or we could revert back to 2009 stylings when the DLine stopped the run and blitz different LB's for pressure. We could potentially go 270-320-325-280 across the front for with Goggins, Crume, Sloan, & Bromley and send Dy Davis or Cam Lynch on the blitz and that's without any of the new editions factored in.

This year his lack of bulk and no CJ caught up to him. Someone mentioned he has invite to camp with Raiders. (no link)

MM was always more hype than substance. I was never that impressed but allowed myself to believe he would break out last year. Well he didn't. He was a guy that was always close to making a play but never actually made the play. He also didn't get any bigger from year to year and that was the one thing he needed to do more than anything.

MM had a nice run here and the Hookbar/shite mustache and all that make him a memorable player.

Spot on. Memorable off the field, memorable name, memorable super troopers mustache... on the field performances, not so memorable.
