Niagara signs Greg Paulus to extension through 2026-27

He hasn't shown much so far.

Tough place to win at.

I'm sure he'd like to have had a little more success.

I'd like to see him win his league, and maybe win 20 games. So far, he hasn't done better than 5th, and this is his 3rd or 4th year.

It’s Niagara he has done well under the circumstances.

I see they haven't been a good team in about a decade, save for one year they won 19 games and made the NIT.

But right before that, they had 12 out 14 winning seasons and won 20+ games 4 times in that stretch ending around 2010.

So, it's not like it can't be done. Niagara has some tradition, and it's not all the way back to Calvin Murphy.

Someone whose opinion I trust loves him. Says he gets more out his players than most coaches. Thinks he’s eventually going to be a good one…..and thinks he’d be a good fit at Syracuse.
Just one opinion, but I think he could really energize the locals. Short of a big, national name, he might get the most buzz, locally.

Joe Mihalich did a real good job there and then took over Hofstra where he did even better.

Niagara was always considered a pretty good MAAC program. Not easy for schools to go up there and win.

I would like to see Paulus have some success. But I do think he will have a bright coaching future.

I’ve been told by numerous people that Wildhack loves him. I don’t get many basketball nuggets but this is one I’ve heard consistently.
This is absolutely a fact. Beilein used to be one of those people as well but not anymore obviously. Greg will be a guy. I know Greg very well and he would be honored to be a part of SU basketball trust me

I'm going to side with Matt on this one and go against the majority in this thread on Paulus. He may very well turn into a great coach, but I'd like to see a bit more before I get too excited about him. I know he took over a bad situation, and I realize there are some "buy games" that Niagara has to play out of conference that hurts his overall record. But I'd like to see more conference success at this point in his tenure. We'll see how this season goes and I might be more excited about him.

IF Paulus becomes the HC here, I’d be curious to see who his assistants are. I wonder if he would bring anyone else connected to Duke, which could certainly help with recruiting connections depending on who it is. I would assume that all current assistants would not be here. I do think Paulus would want to keep some connection to SU on the bench though, since he is a Syracuse native himself.

Hiring GP would be clever, both a Syracuse guy who understands our landscape and a clean break from the JB tree.

If he can sell his ability to recruit to Syracuse could be a very interesting candidate.

How does he recruit here? “Hey guys, come to the school that I snubbed even though it was my hometown school!”

That’s not a top ten issue for 99% of players.

When am I gonna play.
Are we gonna win.
How am I going to be featured.
How much NIL $ am I gonna make.

Etc…
He’d be a clean break from the 2-3.

I’m not saying he’d be atop my list, but I’d understand the hire.

I think Mike Hopkins is a better choice than Greg Paulus at this point in time. Maybe not in 3 years, but I don't think Boeheim is staying past this season, and Paulus is not ready yet.
