I doubt it was a contractual issue. If it wwere, why would he sign before he explored other options. This looks like a classic case of everyone getting something and no one getting hosed. I hate to say it, but this looks like the best deal the Yankees could have realistically hoped for if their true intent was to keep Sabathia. He may have gotten more years and $ on the open market.
