The guy was worthless, that is what gets me. He sucked. Figuratively you gutter dwellers. Outsiders think he is a better coach than any of us do. If they only knew how bad he was, there would be even more questions

You're right Milly - i've long wondered how good a coach he was and why he had such a great rep. Sure there was Ronny and DC but there has been a much longer line of poor centers as of late. Though Fab is turning it around so maybe he was working well with him, hopefully this doesn't stunt his progression.

Bernie has never been irreplaceable. I wish he had been replaced back in 1985. Maybe JB has one or two additional NCs.

I just think that is the least of anyone's worries in all of this

Personally I've thought for 10 years he should have moved on or been let go. Obviously I've never seen a practice so I don't know what he does there, but on the bench he just sits there like a lump holding a clipboard. All the other assistants actually do some coaching during games.

I remember the one game he coached while JB was recovering from surgery. We lost a winnable game.

I'm sorry but what a dumb post this is. If you're reacting to the acts of this man,I guess I can understand. But, by all rights and according to ALL that were directly coached by him, he seemed to be beloved. Pretty much all of them have credited Bernie with making them a better player. This tragically sick man was obviously two different people.

i have always thought he was extremely overrated as a big man coach

bad coaches don't have former players who say their coach made them worse. i discount what his players say

Bernie did have a pretty good track record with a lot of big guys. Otis Hill, Etan and Seikaly improved every year when he was here.

Oh god, that can be horribly misconstrued!!! Yuck

If my memory serves me correctly, Bernie went 1-2 during the 3 games he coached in the 01-02 season. We lost at home to NC State (and Julius Hodge) and on the road at Georgia Tech.

In fairness, Boeheim lost a lot of games that year, as well.

I think Millhouse is probably overstating it, but it seems like Bernie would be a very replaceable type. Never heard much about him on the recruiting trail. And given where the program is, we shouldn't be recruiting as many developmental big men.

And yes, I'm thinking about basketball at a time like this. Please don't tell the authorities until I've had a chance to buy a new house.

Bernie was awful in those games. At the time, we sat right behind the bench and it was clear BF didn't know what he was doing. I remember JB came back though was clearly not ready. I think we played USF? when he returned and could not sit down. He was pissed that the crowd sucked and turned back a few times and waved he's hands saying "you guys suck for not cheering the team" (it was dead in there).

I think Bernie was a running joke among my cuse fan friends for a good decade at this point. I'm not even sure why. I know the watkins/roberts era did little to help his cause as a coach in my eyes. But ultimately I'm fairly certain that 75-80% of people view him as exceedingly replaceable, fairly or not.

Thank you.

I never liked Fine as a coach and was sickened by the praise he always got. We have seen so many bigs with huge potential as freshman never culminate to anything that pure experience didn't create. I never liked him but just accepted the fact that he was there until JB was gone. Now I'm really wishing that JB had felt the same way and replaced him years (or ideally decades) ago.

So frustrating to have someone who you thought wasn't even a good coach be the cause of this .

Unfortunately, since we can't fork the universe to see two different development paths, the "credit" given Bernie has to be gauged as simply 'thanks for working with me.' You cannot determine or put a metric on the Progress or Development.

Who's to say DC, Rony, Warrick, et al would not have benefited more from a different 'big man coach?' I'm not sure why there has been so much credit given to Fine. Players develop naturally. They get stronger and more experienced. Naturally. Without that coach. The only reason people trust Fine's developmental skills is because he's so long-tenured. I don't think i've ever seen it mentioned here, from the fanboys, What Is It Specifically that Fine does/did to help players develop.

Going forward... Who do we want to replace him... People are talking about Harried. I know he's got HC experience. But, we don't need a HC. I'd love it if DC wanted to come aboard. Experience be damned. Every genius has to begin somewhere. DC has qualities that would be valuable: 1) Name. He was a #1 NBA draft pick. That, alone, is going to hold a significant amount of weight with a recruit and subsequently with a player who then has to listen to him. Not sure who was respecting Fine... 2) Personality. Remains to be seen if it translates to the patience you need with these kids, but we've already seen how he relates to them. 3)Actual, demonstrated skill. DC played the PF position (and occasional C) exactly the way i would love to see it played henceforth. In my mind, he is the prototype. 4) He was versatile. A power player. A finesse player. He blocked shots and rebounded. He could dribble, and drive. Pull up from three or slam it. A complete package. Being able to share all of those skills... mmmmph. Herman Harried? He may be a great coach now, but during his playing days, we sorta mocked him a bit. The 'helicopter' thing was fun, but on the court, it was the occasional soaring dunk mixed with... well, not much else.
