Hear me out. Betsy is a more versatile scorer in the half court. Is it also a coincidence that our defensive rebounding was respectable without Donnie?

I think Betsy for Donnie is a wash at worst and with physical matchups it’s actually a net positive. I do think Donnie’s length may have been helpful passing over their really hard hedges… but who knows.

Donnie has the much higher upside, but I’m not sure he has the mentality to reach his potential.

Think the ball moves better but not sure I see Betsey scoring versatility. Basically a deep shooter.
I would take Sadiq over Donnie. Does the winning stuff and should have played more down the stretch.

If nothing else we didn’t waste 3 or 4 possessions with Donnie trying to go iso 25 feet from the basket.

I think its matchups. We matched up well against Houston w/o Donnie. We could guard their 4 guards with ours. Against Kansas we would need Donnie for his size.

We had FT issues for certain, but really we lost the game on missing open 3 pointers and taking rushed 3 poin shots. We made the correct reads and great passes to the open man 3-4 times in the first half and missed to really put pressure on Houston.

I don’t know if we are or not. And as others said, a lot depends on matchups.

But I will say this: today, nobody played soft, and our shot selection, considering the level of defense was very good.

Donnie brings lots of positives, but I don’t think those are necessarily his positives. It’s on him to match the intensity and the decision-making the team showed today.

If he can truly become an alpha, the sky is the limit for this team.

Sadiq’s guy didn’t guard him when he was in which allowed them to double every ball handler. Betsey is basically a less athletic Southerland.

Just tell the guys whenever they get doubled, throw the ball at the rim and sadiq will be there to dunk it lol make a strength out of a weakness

I mean betsey had a good scrimmage against buffalo and played well today. We are anointing him a less athletic southerland?

Donnie is still a freshman, in terms of experience. He might not have made the difference tonight, but hopefully, the game slows down for him soon and he becomes the player he can be.

I’m somewhat worried about the game 2 letdown without Donnie. We went all out into OT and Kansas played a soft Notre Dame team today. We also have a shorter turnaround than Kansas.

The way we play defense and the extra mins tonight and team being down a man hurts. Game 2 and game 3 are where we really will need the depth.

Our defensive rebounding was terrible. Every possesion we had 1 guy trying they had 3-4 every time. It was horrible.

They were only plus 6 on the glass total. We got a higher pct of our own misses (42 pct) than they did (40 pct). That is also one of the strongest aspects of their program year in year out and we battled near even most of the game.

I was a little disappointed in Sadiq, tbh. He played good defense but he can do more on offense and rebounding. That play where he had an open dunk and instead tried to lay it in off the backboard (and scored on a goaltending call) drove me crazy. Sadiq has jump out of the gym hops and athleticism and needs to slam that home with authority. If Derrick Coleman or Etan or many many of our other star forwards were in that position, they would have attacked that rim like maniacs and slammed it home. You have to try to overpower your opponent. It was a moment of softness that I didn’t like to see from Sadiq. He and Donnie need to develop a little more of killer instinct around the rim. Kyle seems to have it.

That’s Kyle’s job. And right now he’s doing that better than Sadiq. And because they’re similar players, it’s not our best offensive line up.

I’ve stated in other threads if he wants more time, especially when Donnie comes back, he could give us five minutes a game as a small ball center basically doing everything Kyle does, as that is where his skill set is closest to right now.

I agree with this. Great analysis. Sometimes things are not as they seem . Houston was not getting the kind of offensive rebounds that North Carolina or Clemson gets against us where they grab the rebound and put it back right away, and sometimes get a foul as well.

So many of their rebounds were back iron long misses, because they took a lot of tough shots. Those type of misses always favor the offensive team.

Dirty had a cup of coffee in the NBA.

If Betsey makes it that far I'll be thrilled.
