Like everyone I am enjoying this pleasant surprise sweet 16 run, no one knows what will happen tomorrow but I honestly didn't think we would make the tournament a month ago. Regardless of what happens tomorrow and beyond we are playing with house money.

I saw a number of discussions on various threads trying to dissect what went right at the end of the season giving us this success. If I were to sum up everything I have read so far, the reasons are:

(1) the insertion of Kadary and Jesse into the rotation allowed them to show what they can do, something many fans have been asking for including Etan Thomas.
(2) Kadary and Jesse are finally ready to contribute and before they just weren't.
(3) The team didn't really get better, the zone did it's thing in the tournament against teams who were not prepared for them.
(4) Buddy's sudden surge from an average shooter to a great shooter.
(5) The team playing together long enough and there is this thing called Chemistry and Confidence.
(7) JB's tightening the leash on AG and JGIII on shooting 35' deep 3s two seconds into the shot clock.
(8) Some health reasons us fans are not aware of, someone getting healthier and performed better.

It could be all or many of the above, I have no clue.

HOWEVER, if you listen to this JB interview with Colin Cowherd:

At the very beginning, JB said:

"...We have three really good shooters this year, so we started out shooting a lot of them, problem was we were shooting them but we weren't making them so it was a struggle, and then as we get longer into the season guys get healthier, the COVID pauses hurt us a little, but we started to make shots, you are a lot better coach when the ball goes into the basket, we run the same plays, shoot the same shots, but it's going into the basket..."

So according to JB, the reason is guys getting healthier but mostly shots start falling. They were not going into the basket before, they are now. None of the reasons listed above.

Well, if an intrepid math person were to look at shots in prior games, factoring in offensive rebounds and turnovers, increase the make % in each game ( for 2/3 points hits), by the make % of the last 4-6 games, then project the score for SU for each game, we would see what their record would be.

Or maybe all of the reasons listed above. They all contribute to making more shots including different people taking shots and better shots being taken.

I am going with (4) Buddy and will add Braswell’s contribution to the defense. Have your best shooter make more shots; add to the zone’s effectiveness = keep playing, Simple.

I think it’s funny that people are speculating how the long isolation is affecting the players. We live in Syracuse. In a normal year, we are in shutdown trapped inside for six months out of the year. This is nothing!

Yeah . I don’t get the shut in thing vis a vis covid .. nothing about the pandemic is stopping you from going out and walking , running , biking .. etc .. getting sun...
sure weather wise some places have it worse , but that’s the same every year

Yeah, but these are college kids, they might actually need to lock them in their rooms to keep them from finding girls

About
(8) Some health reasons us fans are not aware of, someone getting healthier and performed better.
I think JGIII got Covid 19 before the season started. I saw he often has short phantom cough just like me. I also had Covid 19. Even I recovered, there are scars on my lung and sometimes I had short cough even I am healthy. Just feel I want to cough. I don't have this before I got Covid 19. This must affect his shooting because it is beyond human's control and could happen at any minute.

So sorry to hear this. I hope this improves over time.

typical bs---MANY of us had been pleading through the season for braswell, kadary and edwards to get minutes . gee-- nothing has changed though.

JB is great at crafting a story to fit his position.

"Nothing has changed" is a quote from miamicuse not JB.

miami listed a bunch of things he got off of threads here and implied that JB dismissed those ideas in the Cowherd interview. That's not what happened. Cowherd asked why JB stuck with the strategy of shooting numerous threes early in the season even though they weren't hitting them. JB said that as they got past the Covid pauses and guys got healthier, shots started falling. Take that for what it's worth, but nevertheless, the conversation did not go down as the OP portrayed it.

That's true, that my original post was MY interpretation and extrapolation.

Just like your post is yours.

Cowherd started the interview (not sure if it's truly the start of the interview as it seems the clip was edited), he asked JB about his adaptability in having his teams shooting more threes. It's unclear whether he meant shooting more threes in recent years or more three this year in particular. But JB's answers to me was pretty clear, he said, specifically, this year they are shooting more threes because "they have three really great shooters."

Again, his quote was ""...We have three really good shooters this year, so we started out shooting a lot of them, problem was we were shooting them but we weren't making them so it was a struggle, and then as we get longer into the season guys get healthier, the COVID pauses hurt us a little, but we started to make shots, you are a lot better coach when the ball goes into the basket, we run the same plays, shoot the same shots, but it's going into the basket..."

To me the later part of his quote was no longer answering the why shoot so many threes question, but more a quick caption of the entire season and kind of an attempt to explain why they got to the sweet sixteen despite early season struggles.

guys get healthier was a factor he said.

they weren't making shots then, they are making shots now, same shots, same plays, makes him a "better" coach when shots fall. Yes I interpreted that to mean they are not doing anything differently.

Of course, I have also watched another interview (I think with Dan Patrick) where he said Buddy and Joe were affected more so by the COVID pauses as they lost timing as shooters as a problem.

I usually don't try to dissect much into his presser because he rarely give complete answers, only nuggets of them and they may even contradict another presser an hour earlier. Just thought this one is interesting just because there were so many discussions here on why we are playing better as a team near the end. Of course it's nice to be able to discuss this instead of the dead silence after a tournament miss or a rejection to a NIT invite.

Thanks. But I am a programmer. The short cough doesn't matter to me. But it could cause JG III turnovers. Those unforced turnovers and lower shooting percentage is due to Covid 19 side effect.
