I agree with a lot of that, but a couple things need to be considered.  When these games were booked in 2009, we were still in the Big East and Marrone had just been hired.  We were in our absolute depths as a program, so high visibility games were important.

Second, by playing games down there, we make it very easy for the NYC based media to cover us.  This results in us getting more coverage for these games than if they had been played in the Dome.  So the media was another concern.
 
Finally, I imagine that the guarantees were very good, based on what Gross has said before about being able to cover 3/4 of the budget based off the Giants Stadium game, so there's that.   And, yes, the ability of NYC area alumni to see games is important, too, if we could ever turn out for football down there like we do for basketball games in the Garden.
 
I don't fault Gross as much for doing this now as I did at the time.  Now that we're in the ACC, games in NYC don't hurt the home schedule as much - you're still going to get a couple big time "name" teams on the home schedule, so season ticket sales shouldn't suffer as much.  When we were stuck in the old Big East, that wasn't the case.
