Put up 23 against Yale and lost 21 of 32 faceoffs but still beat Brown by four (another example of how faceoffs aren’t everything). MacKesey is a terror and I’m not sure we have anyone on the roster who can guard him. It would be really encouraging if SU could win one of these last few games but I have my doubts.

The more I think about the coaching situation the less optimistic I am about that as well. As of Friday, so before this weekends games, Syracuse leads DI in penalties with 46. I’ve always equated that with poor coaching. Other top teams are up there (UNC with 43, Duke with 38), but to me it says you’ve got a team that is getting beat, that is being overly aggressive, and that is undisciplined. With SU losing so many faceoffs it puts them at another disadvantage to face so many extra man opportunities. The bright side is that they ranked 12th in penalty kills.

Additionally it seems like I’m every game they are starting from a deficit. Against UNC and Maryland it felt like those games were over in the first quarter. They came back to make those games respectable, and to a bigger extent with Notre Dame, but even against the lesser teams like Hofstra and Hobart they are letting teams score multiple goals before they get on the scoreboard. Why isn’t this team starting the game when the opening whistle blows? Again, kudos to them for coming back but they put themselves in huge holes, and against the better teams they can’t pull themselves out.
