Against Notre Dame I thought SU's defense took a step in the right direction. This was the first game where they played with the right kind of energy and focus from the tip and maintained that kind of intensity pretty much throughout. This team must play that way on defense if they want to have success. Donnie makes his fair share of freshman mistakes which is to be expected, but he plays a lot of minutes for a frosh and I really like his attitude, effort, and the way he brushes off his mistakes and has a next play mentality. He has a strong mental game and obviously a lot of physical talent and I am excited to see him develop this season. On that note who is the leader of this team (JJ is out)? What is this team's identity? I think we will see the answers to those questions as long as this team continues to play with the right kind of effort and energy on defense. It would be unusual and perhaps unnatural to see a frosh become the leader but you never know, and it will be interesting to see who emerges especially while JJ is out. This L in South Bend is a conference road game. Notre Dame has a new coach in Micah Shrewsberry who did an excellent job at Penn State and surprised a lot of people. He also left that program in better shape than it was when he took it over. Notre Dame needed a win in a big way, and they showed up ready to play for their coach and to get a home conference W and start the conference schedule strong. This is a painful for loss for the Cuse, but in the end winning conference games on the road is almost always a challenge. I am seeing more good habits from this team and less of the bad habits. This team still has a lot of potential and we could see a lot of growth this season. These guys need to continue to play hard and improve on defense, clean up some of the decision making, and develop a winning identity as a team. They need to be coachable. Learning from mistakes is often painful, but it is much more painful to learn from mistakes while sitting on the bench.
