So are you factoring in the all zone issue? Because that is a real issue and deterrent like it or not. It has been chronicled over and over by posters in the know who cover recruiting on/off of this board. All zone eliminates certain prospects immediately. Generally the elite ones. Also, the coaches have to ‘verify’ first who to actually try to target/visit when they find out that a certain kid would be OK with playing all zone. Now, the murky part is how much kids talk and play telephone in regards to how ‘all zone sucks’ or is ‘uncool’ as well as how many coaches use it against them in recruiting. One would expect this to be happening. Now, in the grand scheme of things I don’t think all zone hurts you or your prospects on the next level. Personally, I’m beginning to worry more about the offensive scheme and product on the floor on that side of the ball for the past four years or so as a major deterrent. You don’t see many fundamentals exhibited, barely any guys who can dribble and pass lately, no transition, etc. That’s for another day to belabor. So, in closing, the all zone limits your style of play on the court obviosuly and also limits what recruits you can realistically get. It’s also hard to tell and is murky in terms what Hopkins coaching here could’ve brought in terms of players and success. Personally I did not want Hopkins and prefer somoene completely outside of SU to be the next coach but you see what he is doing at UW. Mixing up styles, fun and exciting basketball, with a supposedly less talented roster than SU’s. One credible person who covers recruiting was told that recruits and coaches were really on board with a Hopkins change and having a fresh and different scheme and perspective. Then the sabotage happened and you also lose the good cop who kept things balanced behind the scenes and prevented a few real disasters and/or departures. No excuses next season.
