We have a vicious schedule next year. We start out Maui ( I will be there) with potential games with Baylor, Georgetown (ugh), Cal, Arkansas and Minnesota. We move into an ACC Schedule with Duke 2x, Miami (the ACC Champions) 2x, North Carolina, Notre Dame, NC State and Pitt (whom I hate to play) 2x. The only relief is the away schedule in the ACC (VaTech, Maryland, Clemson, Virginia and BC).
If we are not on top at the start, it's going to be a long season. We have six guys who have never played in an SU game and 5 who've never played zone.

g-town isn't in the Maui tournament. Gonzaga is. You also forgot st. johns.

We'll have a SG whose already played in the ACC, at Duke. +1
Fair and Grant as a potent dynamic duo inside and out. +1
Coleman WILL come back from the summer as AO II. +1
Ennis does not have to have an incredible or even great first year. He just needs to distribute and that's what he's best at. +1
Cooney may never see the floor in the ACC depending upon BJ Johnson's progression. +1
As of right now we still have 2 players (Rak and BMK) who could each respectively avg. over 2.5 blocks each. +1
Our offensive rebounding prowess is still intact if not better, and the defensive boards should come along. This will be helped by strong body acquisitions like Roberson and Patterson. +1
We still got Jim. +1

I could go on all day.

don't sell short on Cooney just yet.

If BJ Johnson can become as productive as Cooney or more productive, I'd rather see him out on the floor behind Gbnijie.

Cooney hustles on D... but going from 6'6 to 6'4 in the zone doesn't sound as good as from 6'6 to 6'7 if the talents comparable.

Sorry 'bout the GTown - Zag miss but still Gonzaga should be in the Championship game. As to true blue, you're right, at the end of teh season all of those things should be true. 10 more days to get it started should be a major help.

They should be ready come ACC basketball.

Playing in Italy, then Maui and then against a improved OOC schedule (it's gotta happen) they'll be fine.

There's a lot to be excited about. Fair/Grant on either side of Rak/Keita/Coleman is monster. Cooney's got a year of experience and hopefully he can relax and just play ... if not, G or BJ are going to eat his minutes.

I think there are potential weaknesses ... First of all, where's our outside shooting going to come from? Besides CJ, who cant' be two places at once, we have no proven outside shooter. Lots of candidates ... but that will be an issue.

Second, our defense will take time to gel. We have lots of length. Now we'll need quickness, movement and experience to defend.

Third, TE is a savvy prospect. I like his game and his BBIQ seems high. But he has yet to play against elite college talent (although as Francis points out, he came up big under pressure against D-1 talent in HS). I agree we won't need him to score 20 points ... but he has to be good enough to make other players better. And I'm not sure yet who's going to be able to score the ball even if Tyler distributes it (except for CJ).

Possible reliable 3 point shooters: Ennis, Johnson, Patterson, Fair.

Possible players who can knock it down if left open: Gbnijie, Roberson and Grant.

It's important that JB allows Grant to further develop a 3 point shot. Hopefully if Fair gets stronger and more aggressive, Grant can learn from CJ's first three years and take advantage of those corner 3s, baseline jumpers and being active down low (which he's already shown flashes of).

I have no idea how well Gbnijie shoots.

Any word on other OOC opponents? Villanova? Hoyasuxa? And do we do the ACC-B1G challenge or do we sit out a year on that?

I'd love to see a matchup with UL. Gotta believe they'll pack there out of conference with the weak Big East.

Agreed on most of this, except Patterson is not a likely 3pt threat. Also, while Grant should be able to develop an outside game in time, his area is the paint -- with that incredible wingspan, athleticism and knack for the ball. For outside shooting, I think Gbinije is the X-factor for this team. TC is probably the presumptive starter at the 2, but if Gbinije has an outside shot, he will take minutes from TC or conceivably turn him into a backup. A talented, if spindly, BJ could also be in the mix if Trevor's confidence problem continues. If Gbinije doesn't have range, TC will start and Gbinije will back up the 2 and probably also spell TE at the point. Gbinije ran point against MCW in practice, so backing up TE is plausible.

Up top, I think TE will emerge as a better transition guard than MCW. Defensively, he's not as long, but he's sneaky quick and will feast on the passing lanes in our zone as MCW did. No he won't block shots and dunk on the opposing team like MCW. But he's surprisingly court-savvy ... we'll see how he learns the offense and adjusts to playing zone at the elite level.

Roberson will be an interesting addition. Some project him to start. I'm reserving judgment until I see him play in the ACC. Either way, with our depth at forward, JB will have lots of options. From my seat, with the talent and length that Grant/Roberson bring, CJ will have more opportunities to roam around and play his natural (3) position and inflict damage. Against smaller teams, CJ or Grant could rotate at the 4 and Roberson could come in and do his Rudy Gay imitation. I'm literally getting dizzy/giddy over the stable of forwards we have, since CJ announced his return.

Our 5 rotation is also deep and talented. We have 14 fouls to give and still have someone decent in the middle. Defensively, Keita has grown leaps and bounds and is a defensive force, and Rak emerged as a solid defender towards the end of the season. Coleman has struggled with zone defense, and he'll need a good summer of weights and high fiber food to reach his potential (10-15 pounds lighter). On the offensive end, if just one of our 3 centers explodes (it could be two), we will have more balance than last year's team. Along with outside shooting, this is another "must" for a FF type season.

No, I'm not saying we'll be FF material yet ... have to see how this young and untested backcourt develops. But that's precisely the reason why JB has put "ITALIAN" on the 'Cuse's summer menu.

We can afford foul trouble now as well.

We haven't had the luxury of that in the Forward or C positions in the past.

I think St John's will be the only former BE team we will play next year (not counting BC, Miami, Pitt, etc., and the possibility of meeting one or more in the post season).

I expect we will get a B1G/ACC matchup, although one ACC team will have to sit it out.

Are you counting Coleman as one who has played zone or not?

Sorry couldn't resist.

yup . . . 3 years in the system Cooney > 17 year old switching positions

the question is how many of the Triche bashers will switch over to Cooney bashing when he starts every game?

What is it that makes you so sure?

A ouija board?
A crystal ball?
An oracle from somewhere? (Delphi or Delhi, NY?)

Because if you are extrapolating from what we have actually seen this year and predicting a 30 game starter from that you must have special powers or some help from somewhere.

I hope the kid is GMac or better. But at this point, I'm a Cooney-doubter. I hope he comes back a much better player, but "hope" is all I have. That and the fact that we have seen some remarkable improvements from year to year (Fab Melo comes to mind)

Conference play won't be tougher than what we've been accustomed to (and perhaps easier). The team certainly has a lot of unproven pieces though.

I also don't get the presumptive starter label for Cooney. If MG could have played this year he would have been the 3rd guard. So by that logic the sg spot is MGs to lose. Cooney's play this year did not cement his spot next year at all.

I, too, hope Cooney improves a lot. If he does that he might be able to keep a hold on his 3rd guard spot. Patterson will hustle on D or he won't be out there, and with a freakish 7'+ wing span the defensive potential dwarfs that of Cooney. We need Cooney to be able to shoot and if he can't he is of very little value.

People often wish for JB to play for the best team at the end of the year. IMO that best team would be one that has MG in it. His ceiling and potential are much higher than Cooneys. The quicker JB gives MG the minutes and time needed to mesh with the rest of the group, the better. That means playing MG big minutes from day 1.

Triche came in and immediately made a positively impact defensively and offensively for Syracuse basketball.

Cooney came in and became a liability to almost everyone around him.

I've never been a basher. I'm a realist. Cooney played like he had no business being at Syracuse this year. Hopefully that changes.
