The Mets never sign the big star free agent everyone wants.  They never have the best young player in baseball.  And they certainly never beat our the Yankees in an all out bidding war for one of the ankee’s biggest stars.

I think it was pretty evident when the Mets signed Montas and Holmes as starters we were not going in on any of the big free agent starting pitchers.  If there was any doubt, that doubt should be gone now.  Hoping there is still enough money in the budget to retain Sean Manaea.

It will be interesting to see if Pete Alonso is signed. I could see the Yankees making him a huge offer.  They need a firstbaseman and I think they would like a public win in the press after this, especially if it involves taking a player from the Mets..

My gut tells me a long term contract with Pete is not a good idea.  My heart says it is.  I suspect David Stearns will make the right decision.  But I can’t help hoping Pete gives his team the ole home team discount and finds a way to stay a Met.  I think though this kind of stuff only happens in bad screenplays.
