Here's some hilarious irony - UNC's heavy hitters are none other than BS&K (Bond Schoeneck & King). Folks in Syracuse should be very familiar with the firm- it's a Syracuse firm. They've been the University's counsel for decades I believe. They also were front-and-center for such recent matters as the Bernie Fine mess and our own recent issues with the NCAA. I thought CTO recently intimated that the University was in the process of ending the relationship. Also, that "Walter Byerz" twitter account is a fake account for the first executive director of the NCAA, who has almost be dead now for 2 years. I don't know what to make of that email posted, which is interesting. I guess my two general thoughts are that e-mails like that are not the "get out of jail free" cards that people tend to think they are, and that it's possible that is simply an internal opinion sent amongst UNC's own compliance officers. Notice how it's not addressed to anyone with an @unc.edu e-mail address (or something similar).
