Here is the deal. The fish are sockeye. They turn red when about to spawn. they are pretty much vegies, eating krill and small stuff. They do not bite on hook and line. They spend a couple of years in a freshwater lk before going to sea. They are coming up a clear creek where they spawn. They do not spawn in silty water. Next spring the hatchlings will enter Mendenahll Lk. Males and females pair up and dig a nest in the gravel called a redd. It is a feeding frenzy for terrestrial wildlife. During the day there are busloads of tourists. The female bears with cubs know they are safe from male bears when tourists are around. Males steer clear of people. The females flock to the streams to eat and they hang out under the elevated walkways that the tourons are on. Mostly black bears but some years brownies show up. Brownies (grizzlies) don't care about people, snack food I suppose. When and if they show up the area is gated off.
