Obokoh's redshirt

Today's Rochester paper today indicates That Chino"s redshirt last year was because JB viewed that he would not have seen much/any court time behind Xmas and BMK. I have also have seen that it was because of the NCAA reclassifying him. The SU site roster lists him as a soph but no R for red shirt while Cooney is listed R-Jr. Can anybody clear this up yet? Was he held back but not eligible for redshirt so he has only 3 years eligibility?

He was redshirted, but lost a year of eligibility. Instead of 5 years to play 4, he has 4 years to play 3.

If that weren't so sad it would be funny. My kids entered college from HS as sophs as well and and it has saved us a lot of $ and punishing a kid for this is so consistent for an "organization" like the NCAA.

It's on his high school. When he arrived from Africa they re-classified in a lower grade. For some NCAA reason, they ruled that t he should not have been re-classified. He might as well have played last year because it counted as a year.

I don't believe that is correct, if he had played last year he would be a junior this year eligibility wise. The redshirt year just gave him a 4th year for development purposes, otherwise he would have been done at the end of next year.

Chris Radford, the NCAA's Associate Director of Public and Media Relations, said that for international students, the NCAA Eligibility Center "reviews transcripts to ensure the respective student has graduated with his/her peer class. Any time spent competing in athletics beyond that time, prior to college enrollment, can be subtracted from NCAA eligibility."

The NCAA rule discourages athletes from reclassifying in high school to gain an extra year of high school competition and theoretically become more college-ready. SU coach Jim Boeheim said Obokoh did not play organized basketball in Nigeria.

"Basically, you only have a certain number of years and they're saying when he came over here he was reclassified by the high school because he couldn't do the work. But (the school) couldn't do that," Boeheim said. "They didn't know that. And he didn't know that. So he had an extra year (of high school)."

Nah only the expected 4-year student athletes get punished. The trick is to run a complete one-and-done program like UK and then NCAA loves you for promoting education or something.
