was did Wake do to take a terrible pass defense and make it so hard to pass?

I know they spied Dungey most of the games, It looked to be a bit windy, but he had all day to throw and seldom found anyone.. about all we did was throw quick short passes with almost nothing more than 10 yds down field?

playing 2 deep should not shut is down because teams with better dlines will do that and still not give us time.

Wasn’t at the game but from my iPad perspective I don’t think they shut us down as opposed to we chose to focus on the run game because it was working and the horizontal game because, well I don’t know why.

A couple of potential reasons...
- their dbs were covering our guys like flies on honey... definitely crossed the line into pass interference multiple times but I give them credit their corners were solid
- our guys were getting out fought for the ball on multiple occasions.
- it was a windy day and with Dungey’s arm being what it is these days I don’t think Babers trusted him to throw it down the field: even the sideline passes took forever to get there
- the middle of the field wasn’t there for the taking once the rb got past the first line of defense... this the opposite of the multiple men in the box we usually see

I think Babers made the decision to pound the crap out of the ball on a windy day when our receivers were getting out matched.

I think Tommy would’ve sparked the downfield passing just as they suddenly got “open” when he subbed in vs NC. There were several missed opportunities because Eric couldn’t connect, and he seems to have 2 or 3 What bubble screen throws into the turf or the stands. Sort of become the expectation now.

That being said, his running threat was enough to get the job done. Dino wanted to stay conservative in this one which is fine. But that kind of strategy won’t work against a better opponent. We need both QBs and can’t wait 3 quarters to make a change against ND and BC.

The wind was against us in the first and third quarters, it was strong enough to maybe have an affect. Close man coverage made plays develop more slowly. Pass interference throughout the first half especially was not called. Some dropped balls by Custis and Butler. Not many poor throws by Dungey. Just a lot of small things added up & once it was clear we could run with success that was the game strategy.

There were 2 clear occasions, one with Custisa and another with Butler where they clearly beat their guy for what could have been a TD, but the ball was severely under thrown . There was definitely some accuracy issues

yep, and both those particular balls we "held up" by wind. The pass on the first possesion to Custis (where a PI could have been called) in particular was shoved back by the wind.

Severely being an underrated word. Clear Td 2 weeks ago.

He had some bad passes and he did throw primarily shorter passes, but he was 23-35. No TD's and no interceptions. He had a decent game...his running was a major plus.

Wasn't there but ED had some bad luck not getting flags on perfectly thrown balls and Custis had tons of drops. And it was windy He went into Warrior mode and carried us with his legs. The staff made the correct decision to not throw difficult passes and we didn't need to do that to move the ball. His completion percentage ended at 65.7% despite being a little off on his throws and the drops and the blatant non flags. It was a great adjustment from my view on the couch.

No turnovers was Billy Fucillo HHHUUUUUUUGGGGGGGEEEEE for us but truly good coaching as well Wake had a very good start and got the breaks and we should have started from a 17 or 21 point hole yet the game was never in doubt after the 1Q.

It's pretty rough to criticize Dungey's throwing in a game where he completed (I think) 16 in a row.

Exactly. He did what was asked of him. The lack of PI calls in the first would be enough for me to abandon the deep ball. It was laughable. Good game plan by coach.

The interesting thing this board likes to do is to play what If regarding QB. Many people like to assume that Devito would have thrown all over them. My concern is next year do we have the ability to play a game like Saturday where we grind it out. Hopefully we can and hopefully we don’t have to very much.

I think Eric's first throw which was air mailed about 10 feet too high was in the staff's head. After that some inaccuracy, wind gusts and no flags resulted in a change in strategy. IMHO we didn't run enough in the first half.

The back end officiating crew let both sides bang - I liked it but they are going to get skewered in film review.

WF dropped 7 and sometimes 8 in coverage, with 2 deep and what looked like man under (wasn't at the game so guessing here). They dared SU to run against the light box or to throw short and that's what SU took (as opposed to WF suddenly being a great pass D).

I also don't think they "spied" Dungey that much in 2nd half based on Babers post game comments about telling ED "if we run you they won't have a chance." Part of that also had to do with WF missing so many LBs.

All the more reason i wonder why if they played the pass so hard we had to run the QB to move the ball.. Felt like we had some solid runs, but seldom 2-3 in a row.
