But unless I'm crazy, and I'm a remarkably unapologetic Marrone apologist, wouldn't marrone maybe, probably, MAYBE be 5-5 at this point as well? does that prove that Marrone, a great strategist, hit his ceiling at the college level, and maybe, MAYBE, HCSS has a higher ceiling considering the ineptitude of the offense, the ineptitude of the defense for GTech? I don't know. I could never see Marrone go 1-11, but I could also never see him go 11-1. I could see, from what we've seen, HCSS go 1-11, but wouldn't surprise me if in 5 years we went 11-1/10-2.

I'm probably just crazy, and bored... and both.

I think Marrone would be 6-4 at this point - Penn State would've been a win, but the rest of the results (w/l) would likely be the same.

No idea. Just can speculate on what could have been and I think this staff will be getting better and better through time.

"Marrone would be 0-10 at this point." - ....

;)

I agree about the overall record, don't think Marrone would have made much difference. The ONLY difference I could see is the blowouts, he just kept games closer so it hurt a little less (for me as a fan.) Then again, when were we playing Clemson and Florida State in the same year under his tenure?

We never played a team of either's caliber

Tend to agree, but Doug needed a miracle to beat a horrible USF and lost to a very mediocre Minnesota. Who is to say that even if Doug beat Penn State that he wouldn't have lost to Maryland or NC State.

I love what Marrone did here, but we were a few breaks away from either an 11 win season or a 4 win season last year.

I agree with that. We'd have been more competitive in the NW / GT games. Not sure that it would have made a difference against Clemson or FSU in terms of the final score.

But I think that the offensive woes might be different or lessened had Marrone stayed. Would be interesting to see what Charley Loeb might have been able to do--assuming he was indeed the frontrunner and would have own the job. Maybe we'd have a more effective passing attack.

We'll never know.

Marrone never faced a team like FSU in his whole time here and some did still get lit up his teams even though they did continue to play hard, like they do now. It's possible that Clemson may be better than any of those teams in Marrones tenure as well. GT, that was a mystery but they are much more like the UConn or USF teams that did well vs SU.

Agreed. About the only difference would be the blowouts.

i think you have to assume the offense would be better. not sure the record would be better. i agree with the 6-4 because psu, we could've won with a better offense. this scheme mcdonald put in place this year is a loser, but maybe its what he felt was best for our particular talent.

That USC team was second tier comparatively IMHO

You're right, but as I recall, they were ranked #2 in the country at the time when we played them. Of course, trying to equate that #2 USC team to this year's #2 FSU team is like saying George W. Bush and George Washington were equally great presidents because they have the same first name.

Assuming "Marrone" means FHCDM and his entire staff, I think we might have another win, if only due to the continuity and perhaps the OC learning curve. Then again, you never know.

I think we'd have a better offense at this point. Marrone probably would have also picked Allen as his QB, but he and Hackett probably would have done a better job with him. I would say Marrone would probably be 1 game ahead, at 6-4.

I'd agree. The previous coaching staff was a little more offensive oriented with more experience than this one. They might have taken more chances with the players at SU. Not certain Drew Allen would've come, and the incoming recruits may have made a difference, but who knows. And I think SU would've pulled out the Penn State game, which they should've done anyways.

Z Allen or Loeb would be our starting qb I think. No comparison at this point between Marrone/Hack versus GMC. I don't think we are much better than 6-4 but so be it.

If Syracuse is going to make significant strides we need the staff to continue to grow and big talent upgrades everywhere

This is my take on it as well. I think the blowouts are more a consequence of a new staff trying to find their legs.
