So there's a "wild" Dungey and an "accurate" Dungey not only on a game to game basis, but also within games. One of those first misses against WF the pass to the short receiver on the sideline looked like it was 5 ft. over his head. This wasn't a miss. It reminded me of pitchers who occassionally thorw the ball over the catcher's head. After a couple of those passes in the UNC game, I asked myself, "Who was that pass even to? That thing had no chance." On the basis of absolutely no evidence, I think that Dungey has a gear he gets in where he just chucks the ball in the general area of the receiver. It's not physical, as some have suggested, its mental. I think that's what Baber's saw when he pulled him and put DeVito in. ( I watched GB v. NE last night with two great QB's, both of whom are extraordinarily calm and thought about ED as a polar opposite) It might be adrenalin. It might be running out of ideas and trying to force things to happen. It might be just unrestrained competitiveness taking over his mind. (Occassionally in basketball or lacrosse I have seen guys take the ball to the hoop or cage against crazy odds driven, I think, by just sheer competitiveness.) I watched another SU player being interviewed the other day who had been a good basketballer in high school. He was asked who he would want on a basketball team composed of SU football palyers. He started with Dungey, not because he is a good player, but just based on his desire to win. I love ED. But I did wonder when he was throwing all this wonderful strikes against NCSU, "Who is this guy wearing #2? Is there an evil identical twin back in the dressing room?"
