This maybe an inappropriate thread for here...and if it is then pull it and I guess put it somewhere. Let me simply start by saying that I was teaching a class and I had a young man yell out at another student, ""!! I called the young man up and told him how offended that I was that he would use such a term...it was offensive!!
In the same vein I was both appalled and offended by the shameless behavior and actions and comments of the students at SAE at Oklahoma University. 2 "students" have been expelled from the University. And what is expected? That their parents will tie them to a whipping post? I think not. The behaviors and actions and comments do not just emanate from out of nowhere but are bred and nurtured by parental attitudes. I attended OU for three years in the 60's and 70's (when I was there and not in Mississippi and Alabama) and I can honestly say that little has changed, apparently and unfortunately relative to racist attitudes.
Kudoes to the young man who has subsequently withdrawn as one of their top recruits for football. Maybe if the University...and it is an institutional offense as well... were hit in the pocketbook by the withdrawal of their top athletic recruits than action would be taken to correct such horrific behavior and attitude. As for the young men? Let them work at McDonalds or...better yet... work for one year, at least, in a community program serving the poor and underpriveleged. Perhaps the students would learn something important about life. But I doubt it. Perhaps instead their parents should spend that time as atonement for what they have taught and made of their children.
Sorry about this diatribe but the recent news just makes me angry not because it happened but because its just the same old, same old that has been sorely evident on the OU campus for decades. And only now is the University discovering that they are a hotbed of racism??? Stop??
