Class of 2021 OLB Erik Slater (NJ) PWO / Grad Transfer

Another Guthrie plug and play?

If we have the scholarship then its good use of it. Even if this kid isn't a starter having some depth is important. He seems like he could be one of those Mike Vrabel/Rob Ninkovich outside 3-4 LBs who can get pressure.
He probably is a good 3rd down option for sure. I wouldn't want him covering TEs or RBs. Pass rush and get the QB type.

As a senior (spring 2021): Started all three games at outside linebacker (Patriot League had a short Spring season only) … had at least two tackles in each game… registered tackles for loss in each of Lehigh’s first two games… named to National Football Foundation’s Hampshire Honor Society… named to Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

As a junior (2019): Started 10 games at outside linebacker… ranked second on team with 12 tackles for loss and third on team with four sacks… totaled eight tackles for loss in first three games he played in… had three sacks against Merrimack (9/28)… set career high with seven tackles against Holy Cross (11/2)… had one of Lehigh’s seven sacks at Colgate (10/5)… named to Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

As a sophomore (2018): Appeared in all 11 games, adding depth at “Hawk” position… made 24 tackles, including career-high seven versus Colgate (11/10)… tied for second on team with 2.5 sacks… had 1.5 sacks against Villanova (9/8)… recovered fumble against Fordham (10/13).

As a freshman (2017): Appeared in final four games on special teams… named to Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.

High school: In 2016 was first team All-County and second team All-State… Was part of 2016 North I Group-3 state championship runner-up team… was part of 2015 North I Group 4 state championship team that also won North NJ Team of the Year… also first team All-League in both baseball and basketball in 2016.

If nothing else, some have expressed concern about LB depth behind the four proven guys. He's got the right size [not sure about wheels] to at least bolster the two-deep as a fifth semi-proven commodity [I understand that this is a jump in level].

And there are worse things if he commits his all to STs. That’s an area we will miss Richards on this year.

Guys like this can be useful in many ways. Least of being the ability to redshirt one or two of the 6 scholarship freshman linebackers. If we don't space those freshmen out a little, the bubble will burst at some point.

Love this addition for multiple reasons. Is he on campus and taking part in preseason?

Nice to have a more experienced player in the LB room with all the uber talented underclassmen. This gentleman hits with bad intentions as well.
