As well, that development of an inward-looking orientation produces another deleterious effect, the old boys club at the top of officiating associations. What that means is far too many officials thus rise by politicking rather than on ability. Better and younger officials simply can't move up, and many lose interest and go find something else to do. And make no mistake, while the three man system was necessary, it extended by at least ten years the careers of fossils like Higgins and Burr, etc. There's no way they could handle those games with a 2 man crew.
