I was listening to Xm radio and Rick neuheisel was on talking about choosing a QB late in the preseason. He made an interesting point that usually when you are getting the QB battle to play out for starter or backup. He said that one issue you find is that the kids often have issues when they get put into game for the first time. If 2 kids are battling to be the backup they get graded based on how they perform in practice. How well the read the D, how they perform the checkdowns, how well they throw. The issue is that the process changes once you get in a real game and have to move the chains. The proper progression in practice is to get the optimal results, but in a game you need to get first downs and keep the ball. The reads and checks are not always the same and you wont really see how the kids react until you see live game action and real results.. We saw this last year. Allen made the better throws and checks in practice. But in a game where pulling the ball down and running adds value and the D will really try to hit you, the stuff Hunt added to the offense started to show. Wilson may have some of that same issue. Maybe the correct read is to throw the 8 yd pattern when the 3 yard pattern will be easier and get the first down . Maybe holding the ball and running had the most upside but letting Gulley run would get 3 and keep moving the chains.. A couple of more first downs would have gone along way the way the game played out. The instant Hunt ran a little it seemed like were going to go down and score. then he leaves and poof.. Much like Vill did little but when the QB scrambled they made plays..
