Ha, this is like literally the second best possible outcome.  This isn't a guy like Marrone that's just trying to show something on the way to the pros.  If he's hired away by another school, that almost has to mean he has turned Syracuse around and proven you can win here.  I'd be very surprised if a much better job than Syracuse is going to come calling after 6 or 7 win seasons.  I'm not aware of any super strong ties, like Frost -> Nebraska or Malzahn -> Auburn or Kiffen -> USC, where it was obvious where things were pointing and the guy had to prove himself merely barely competent and he would be gone.

If he's hired away after three years, I'm guessing that would probably include at least one 8 win and another 9 or even 10 win season.  If he does that, he's definitely done his job.  It might hurt, but if that happens this will have been an absolute home run of a hire.  You tip your cap, and probably have the best pool of replacement candidates that you've had in decades for a hire.
