[QUOTE="Flacusian, post: 1522464, member: 264"] Both notions of bring back Marrone and cutting Shafer loose are deeply flawed. Marrone has walked away from 2 coaching jobs and his level of commitment has to certainly be questioned. Plus, you don't go backwards with the program. If Marrone was the man for the program he would still be here. Clearly he is not. As for Shafer, surely he doesn't have the same type of shine and produce the type of media bytes that some people would like to see from our HC but you certainly can't question his commitment to the program and his drive to succeed. We all knew that there would be some level of OTJ training for Shafer with respect to being a head coach and we've seen enough positive aspects emerge from the program that people who are being objective cannot deny that he has the program moving in the right direction. Some of the things that people are frustrated with concerning Shafer can be fixed/ changed. As Shafer continues to develop as a coach the in game decision making should improve. Sure it's frustrating to lose these close games but we played LSU (one of the primer programs in the Nation) in a really tough and competitive manner and yesterday we played the #25 team right down to the wire. My bet is that next year we win games like that. Shafer may be rough around the edges and do some things which are ostensibly incomprehensible during the games but the guy unquestionably deserves another year from everyone before there is any serious discussion about replacing him. We all want to win and we all want to win NOW. But program building takes patience and it would be a shame to to abandon the Shafer era on account of having be frustrated for so long with coaching staffs which have failed to turn the program around.
