can catch - Sales and only one guy can tackle - Shamarko Thomas.

And that is a huge problem.

I'd add Lemon to the can catch category and Vaughan to the can tackle, tho his role is now far less.

I thought Vaughn played really well last year...very surprised he doesn't start this year. I know they moved people around at the linebacker position, S.D. is just to undersized in my opinion.

Don't know if anyone else agrees with this...?

OPA throwing the players under the bus? That's strange (warning: sarcasm).

I saw West make an unbelievable catch late in the game and Lemon passed Marvin Harrison in catches last night, so he can catch just fine thanks.

Yup. Really reaching now.

I give him credit though. If anybody is going to fit that square peg in this round hole, he'll find a way.

How many Robinson guys are left now that are failing to make all these catches and miss on so many tackles?

Lemon drops too many.

Only Sales is truly reliable.

I don't recall Vaughn knocking me out the way Shamarko does - you can always tell when he is in on a play - the ball carrier goes down immediately.

Nobody else on the team hits like he does - not even close. And that's a problem.

Then we should hire a coaching staff that can recruit receivers who can catch and defenders who can tackle. Crazy thought, I know.

I don't really know what that hackneyed phrase "throwing under the bus" means.

I take it to mean that I am trying to rid myself of responsibility by blaming somebody else.

And that's not what I'm doing obviously.

I am simply stating what I see.

And right now I see players who make too many mental errors, do not hit hard enough, do not tackle well enough and do not make plays - above and beyond - when they have to be made to win games.

I like our players - I support them - and I support the staff. I will continue to go to every game at home and a few on the road. I truly believe that Marrone should be given an extension - at least three more years to allow his recruiting connections and the infrastructure and financial improvements that have begun - but are nowhere near where they will be - truly take hold.

So, no, I am not "throwing anybody under the bus."

I just want to see more smarts and more intensity on the field.

Last night would have been the perfect time to sub Vaughn in for Diabete, but we can't expect the coaching staff to make "quick" adjustments.

Yup...Disappointing. Nothing much more to say about it.

Yeah, that's a great idea.

So, I gather you know some Houdini Recruiter who can convince a kid that Syracuse University is a better situation than say a USC or a Florida or an Ohio State?

What do you think - that certain guys have some magical formula for recruiting - that the shear force of their will or their personality is the deciding factor?

It's not.

It takes money and time and the wow factor that we don't have right now.

It takes a Football Center that knocks kids out. And it takes a national exposure that will soon come with the advent of the ACC.

And, as noted, it takes the development of relationships - relationships that Marrone and the staff have nurtured for the past three plus years.

Don't mistake my frustration for a feeling that we need a new staff. I don't feel that way at all. I know we are getting better - that we have better players and that are schemes are fine.

We need time and patience.

The stupid plays and mistakes and lack of hitting bother me though in the short term.

Vaughan may not make the ooh and aah hits you seem to favor but he is probably the surest form tackler. His problem is he isn't quick nor fast. We chose to get more speed on the field and now we get run over instead. I don't think as a group they are any better than last year. And last year we had a 2nd team all conference MLB.

As to Lemon, I don't think he drops too many. I know he sure catches a lot as evidenced by his reception record. Maybe in his career we have thrown so much to him that it appears he drops more? He dropped 1 last night but I don't think any receiver catches 100% of them. You might point to some drops when he played with 2 broken bones in his hand. The bigger shame is that he had to play with 1 hand as well other times he has been hurt. That's indicative of other problems.

Suddenly we don't have any players.

And we lost to Minnesota because of facilities. :bang:

Very disappointing loss, but it was a team loss. I've heard it was coaching, offense, tackling, catching, OL & DL, defensive backs, linebackers, turnovers, etc., etc., but everyone understood the importance of this game and we couldn't execute well enough as a team to win. We needed big plays from someone and every squad played "hot potato". This game was a lost opportunity when opportunities are things we MUST seize if this season is to be more than just playing out the schedule.

The defense and special teams played just well enough to win, with some assistance by Minnesota, but then our offense & coaching seemed to be stuck in pre-game warmups. Two of our losses should have been wins and we gave the wins away in every part of the game, i.e. special teams, turnovers, offense, defense, coaching, discipline, and just plain smash-mouth football. We got pushed around last nite and that part was very disappointing. There's no way to reconcile our performance with the significance of the games. I'm baffled and don't know what to expect going forward.

We played our best the first two weeks and instead of "turning a corner", we pulled a u-turn. We're a third of the way through the season and seem to be back where we started. We're a team in disarray with no clear sense of purpose. Some have said we don't know how to win but it seems we know plenty about how to win without having nearly enough focus on just playing the game on the field.

I love this team and hope they find a way to put it all together and start winning some games. Losing is hard on fans but it's much harder on the players and coaches. I for one am glad we have a week off. The team needs some time to regroup and fans need some time to back away from the edge. It's a beautiful day today, we have many more opportunities to demonstrate progress in the football program, and basketball season starts soon.

Good post (and avatar, too).

To the original post, Sales drops about as many balls as Lemon does. Too many. And I seem to be the only person on here who's frequently frustrated by his sleepy approach to the game. He seemed to make little effort to run out a second-quarter route last night, making a little contact with the corner and looking to the official to throw a flag. And his blocking leaves something to be desired.

It's an everybody problem. (Funny, though, how people's opinions about the coach determine who bears the blame. Boeheim's kids can't hit free throws? "Stupid Scoop Jardine, can't make a free throw." Marrone's kids can't make a tackle? "No disclipline. Stupid Marrone can't coach.")

Regardless, the drops and missed tackles are hurting us every week.

The Boeheim vs Marrone thing cracks me up. On the one hand we have a guy that is an all time great. On the other we have a guy with a sub 500 record.

I like how you point out Thomas as an exemplar tackler, yet he throws himself around like a missile more than anyone at times.

I thought it was a great image as well. It's a 1903 drawing by Mae Goodelle Chaffee and is a reminder that SU football is historic and traditional. We may lose more games than we want for 10 or 20 years, but we are a player on the national stage and will return to a competitive level. I'm hoping we're on the way back but even if not, we WILL get there. Mae is gone now, but she knew that her drawing would remind those 100+ years later that excellence will out. Syracuse University football will become a player again. "So let it be written so let it be done..."

That couldn't have less to do with who's to blame for the players' errors. You know that.

You're a bright guy and your posts are nearly always well-crafted. That was a stupid retort.

Nice. Looks like one of the drawings that used to accompany game programs. Would be a pretty sweet print to hang on a bar-room wall.

My point was more that one of our coaches has earned the benefit of the doubt and one hasn't yet. I don't understand why that's upsetting.
