But I think when you are in a position such as that, there are expectations. Both expectations of you and expectations that you have of others. I'm pretty sure there were a number of things - facilities, recruiting, etc. - that didn't go as smoothly as he had anticipated, and the upgrading of those areas also didn't come without many hurdles to overcome.

At the end of the day, Marrone did a good job at Syracuse and was on his way to doing a very good to great job. But he left for one of the top 32 jobs in his profession. Can't blame him for it.

That's where the story shifts for me. Millhouse linked to a thread from the year Marrone left SU to go to Buffalo. There were telling comments about Marrone submarining the transition by taking assistants with him, including Hackett who was about to sign on at Syracuse for much more money. Would Shafer have kept all of them? There's no way of knowing. But people that know a lot more than me about matters were pissed about it, and I would venture a guess to say things weren't done the way they should have been done, ethically speaking.

Then you fastforward to this year and him more or less duplicating his antics in Buffalo.

It's water under the bridge at this point, but people do change. Some for the better and some for the worse.
