I think that Georgia's complaint: a two time defending national champion who was #1 virtually all year until their 29 game winning streak was broken in a one TD loss to Alabama in the SEC title game is excluded from the 4 teams playoff - especially when two years ago they lost to Alabama in the SEC title game, got invited anyway and won the title, is even more valid than Florida State's that an undefeated major conference champion should not be left out.

I've always thought that, lacking a comprehensive tournament containing all the legitimate national championship contenders, the tournament we have (4 team or2 team in the BCS era), should simply be something that should be considered in determining who is #1 but not by itself determine who is #1. The final poll(s) should do that. If a team that was left out and yet has a comparable resume to the teams in the playoff is more impressive in their bowl game, they should still be able to make their case for #1. Thus, when USC was #1 in both polls in 2003 but excluded form the BCS game by the computers, they should still have a chance to be voted #1 over the BCS game winner, (LSU), and be considered the national champion, (in fact, that's what the writer's poll did). When Auburn, the undefeated champion of the nation's toughest conference, was excluded in 2005, they should have a chance to make their case in their bowl game. And Georgia should still have a shot at a third straight national tile in the final poll(s) this year.

Next year, everything will be resolved on the field.
