OT - 40 year old guy discovers salt potatoes

every few years I have to send my brother a couple bags of salt potatoes to florida to get his fix.

I went to a NASCAR race at Talladega a couple years ago. The salt potatoes I contributed to the tailgate were a huge hit - the southern folks I was with demolished them.

Salt potatoes and spiedies are the two things I think of which have very regional appeal now, but could really take off nationally. I might add Cornell chicken to that list as well.

I'm from the Utica area. I live in Florida now. I got Utica Greens and Chicken Riggies from Delmonico's in Orlando and took them to a party at my brother's house. Huge hit. I wish more restaurants down here had some of those dishes.

I want to try spiedies with lamb, my grandparents were from Abruzzi, I assume they made arrosticini but my mom and aunts never made anything that resembled it afaik

It's a shame the potatoes aren't as good as they used to be.

They're generally too big nowadays.

I want ping-pong to golf ball size potatoes and only 1/3 to 1/4 of a bag have that size now... A lot are now twice that size.

Not to mention I picked up a bag in Hannaford here in albany that was branded "Empire Salt Potatoes' (not Hinnerwaddells) and they were grown in Massachusetts.

I felt done dirty and was ashamed.

Not the same.

The small ones are just better.

They used to be all small ones.

Sometimes I buy the mini red potatoes that are all that size and use them with my own salt.

You can get Utica Greens and Chicken Riggies in Orlando?? I’m impressed. I always thought an upstate NY themed restaurant could well in the south, with all the transplants. Utica greens, chicken riggies, Cornell chicken, tomato pie, beef on weck, spiedies, salt potatoes. Serve Finger Lakes wine and Ithaca beer. There’s my retirement plan.

Delmonico's in Orlando. It's the same Delmonico's that's in Syracuse, Utica and Albany...

This is the spice of life:
