Torn meniscus, will require surgery.
It's bad but better than an ACL...they can do the will he won't he play during the playoffs again!Torn meniscus, will require surgery.
Some tough moments ahead for Rose. The commercial takes on an ominous overtone now...
It just goes to show how fleeting it all can be!
Mentally... after just coming back from the ACL I predict this guy is toast
there is so much misconception and/or ignorance about Derrick Rose in this thread... wow. why the hate for one of the good guys of the sport?
He was a very good player but something just wasn't right with his recovery/timeframe/approach to the whole thing. It was pretty weird and certainly didn't help his play any when HE finally did decide he was ready.
Maybe it is because I am a Bulls fan, but I thought the reasons were well-documented and were clear and backed by players and the coaching staff.
Yeah, he's been rusty to start the season... but the Bulls still had a pretty good year last year. they had a good thing going and, even though the doctors said he was OK to play from a health standpoint, EVERYONE talked about his lack of explosion in practice. For a guy with a 90% explosion-based game... why come back and ruin the team chemistry that had built up over the year.
Its easy to think that a pretty good Bulls team would be immensely better with a guy like Derrick Rose in the fold, but I don't think people understood that it wasn't Derrick Rose that would have come back.
As for this years injury - they say it is a 4-6 month recovery from surgery. We will see how he does. The team got with Rose to discuss options. He could have gone the Dwayne Wade route and had the meniscus removed for a quicker recovery time... but his knee would be shot for the rest of his career (and life).
Thibs says that Derrick's spirits as as high as can be, and that he is disappointed for letting down his team and he wants to do whatever he can for them.

When you sit an extra year after being clear and then still baby yourself in preseason something isn't right. He certainly played like he wasn't sure about his health. If he comes back from this one after a much much longer period than necessary I don't think he will ever be what he was. Kobe will be back with a vengeance this year because he will kill himself trying to prove he can get back to the level he was at not pamper himself and wait as long as he possibly can before playing again.
this is insane logic. kobe's best years are past him and he's achieved everything in the sport. rose should be as careful and comfortable as he can be and everybody should . it's his body and his whole career is in front of him. there's a bunch of guys (grant hill comes to mind and i imagine Bynum will be on the list soon) who now say they wish they waited before coming back. so what if he takes an extra year now. he'll have it on the backend.
i'm not saying it's apples to apples. just the idea of having major surgery on something fundamental to doing your job at the highest level...and having every joe schmoe have an opinion on when you *should* be ready to come back. agree on mental makeup. he is really young, though. his body will last longer for not taking on the mileage now...and his maturity in age will help him cope and get past this, at some level. He is D-O-N-E. Done. I hope I'm wrong, but his mental makeup has got to be devastated right now. And your comparisons to Grant Hill and Andrew Bynum are just as off as the Kobe comparisons. Hill had micro-fracture surgery and Bynum reportedly has a degenerative knee condition. Those conditions are way worse than a torn ACL in terms of being able to come back from and return to your old self.

He's paid to play. He was cleared to play by the doctors and didn't play. Sorry but something ain't right. Did he not accept his money while he decided not to be ready? Guess what you have some risk involved physically with lower body joints especially in ball but you get great people looking after your body and you are well compensated. If it were my team i'd be worried that he doesn't have the fight in him to come back. Once they cut you you aren't ever feeling the same, you can't wait forever. Some guys also just don't hold up and sitting out longer doesn't really help that either. Again this is my opinion.
