During this crazy year and wholly underwhelming Syracuse season, we’ve been enjoying high school football in Ohio.

My son’s team has adopted the onside kick every time approach. And lo and behold, it works. Never better than our round 2 playoff game against Perry High School with their WVU commIt Jaylen Anderson in the backfield. Perry had booted CVCA from the playoffs the last two years. The third game of the trilogy was much anticipated.

CVCA took the opening kick, ran it down their throats and scored, taking up half the first quarter. Onside kick. Recover, score again. 14-0. Onside kick again. Perfect bounce. Returned for a touchdown. 14-7. Possession 3. Repeat. 21-7. Not deterred by the prior kickoff return, onside kick again. Recover. Score again. 28-7, with 8:55 to go in the 2nd quarter.

CVCA ran 34 offensive plays before Perry’s offense took the field. Perry closed to 28-21 at half. So what to do to start the second half? Onside again. Recover again. Score again.

Overall: 4 of 7 on recoveries. 55-28 on the scoreboard. It was amazing to witness.

Here’s the cleveland.com story:

Now on to Round 3 of the playoffs this week.

Maybe that’s the innovation Babers needs. Unfortunately the other team would eventually gain possession in OT of a scoreless game.

if teams learned how to handle the kicks better they would be even harder to not recover.. but teams dont really work on it much and even if you do you need to have a kicker on your team who can actually do it well.

The % successful in nfl is so low with the new rules. Not sure how it is in high school.

yea it’s become a joke in the NFL

I like the idea of doing a 4th and 15 from their own 25 That has been discussed

“One of the best sophomores in the state, Kyle Snider.”

Has Cuse looked at him + Can you work on him?

Kyle is a beast on both sides of the ball. There’s not a single person at CVCA who is not aware of my Syracuse fandom, given I’ve fully infected my son, who blocks for Kyle, with the same Orange loyalties (which is no easy task, when all your friends pull for the Buckeyes).

The two senior tackles on the team and the QB are attracting D3 offers. QB also has one FCS offer, I believe. This team sent the best player in school history, Tre Tucker, to Cincinnati after the 2018 season. But they’ve just gotten better and better with kids who love football.

How are the onside kick rules different in this league vs NFL/CFB? Those conversion rates sound amazing.

Is this the same philosphy as one I saw on ESPN a few years ago about a HS team that never punts. Always goes for it.

I see your son has grown up. You have great kids,

Roger

I think it’s similar. They just focus on this and have about a half dozen onside variations. The goal is to steal a possession or two per game. The difference is field position is about 15 yards if you don’t recover. For it to work well, you need to trust your defense and also have a strong offense to capitalize on the extra opportunities. (Pretty basic, I know.)

Exactly that philosophy, Roger.

And yes, that chubby sixth grader that was running around the parking lot tailgate at Wake Forest in 2014 is now 6-3, 260. Thanks for the kind words!

I'm the one that is chubby now. Enjoy the games. My son played Lax and it was a fun ride. You ought to read this story

For a laugh at how serious some parents are. Competitive Squash??? the Wake Forest game. Was that two coaches ago?

I expected either someone coming out of the closet, or some fetish that you can't even google yet.

By the way, I found everyone's new gameday beer:

Just ate at Eli fish on Saturday - it is a great place. Thankfully Matty Gray doesn't know you or your terrible nicknames for people, I've managed to keep it mostly away from high school friends

Why do you think I urged one of my good friends to marry someone from your high school?
