OT - Gait's salary

Not sure if this was posted, but could this be true? $700k a year? I know that it was a supposedly outrageous number for a women's lax coach, but I had no idea it was this high

Sounds implausible to me.

The Gaits have a very high profile in lacrosse and his total compensation including endorsements, camps, speaking fees, etc. might get up there. But I don't see SU paying him anything like that as a base salary for a team that draws a couple of hundred people at home.

His salary is $172k.

Might be listed that way, but he's been earning at least closer to 3x that amount from the start from SU or through SU's IMG deal. Similar to the 350k that Jensen was being paid.

Don't people realize that's how SU is spending more $ on women's sports than any other private in the country despite having only 11 women's teams as compared to 20 at Stanford?

in fairness to gait, he has taken the program to another level. they contend for national titles now. it raises the prestige of the school. plus, many have him tagged as coach in waiting for the men's team, correct?

One would suspect that ideology is driving this and not traditional Labor Economics.

Gait's salary is so high because of other factors, he wasnt brought in to be paid that amount to be the womans coach if you catch my drift. Go back to when he was first hired you can connect the dots.

Desko sure messed that plan up by winning a title. Of course it just goes down as another long--term planning mistake by TGD.

So we continue to pay Gait more than 3x the going rate because Desko is just good enough to not get fired?

What?

HOLY CRAP! what a cheap shot by the swim coach!

Anything he said, he lost all respect from me by airing his sour grapes publicly and in detail.

Imagine if Louie Orr was pissed that Fine was the main assistant bball coach and then went to Seton Halls guns a blazin "hey Bernie - your wife is ....! 'Let the good times roll!'"

What a joke.

You're sure about that?

Well, I've never seen either guy's pay stub or tax forms, but multiple people have said the same thing to me from the time they were hired. So I haven't seen the fire, but I've seen the smoke from a few sides.

If it's not true, then I really question Gross' fiscal responsibility because I've chalked up the AD losing money to him overpaying for all of his Olympic coaches.

Last reported number I saw was $85k from IMG. He makes over $100k from camps. Even though it's money first gone to SU then Gait, I'm not sure it's SU "money". It's from cost of attendance first. Then there's the retirement plan money that all coaches get. I'm sure there's bonuses in there too for performance. Don't know if there is a formula, but they account for the value to the university of having a top team. The publicity of being in a final 4 is worth something. Some will tell you stuff like that is also worth applications to the university.

Men's basketball & football are the only sports that are worth applications to the university. Very few others around the country. Definitely not women's lax.

Do you have data on that?

Here's a study on the impact of men's basketball and football on college applications: http://faculty.chicagobooth.edu/devin.pope/research/pdf/Website_SEJ Sports.pdf http://faculty.chicagobooth.edu/devin.pope/research/pdf/Website_SEJ Sports.pdf There isn't one on any other sport because they don't get enough exposure to warrant a study.

If I was doing that study, I would use football and basketball too. They would of course have the largest impact, if there is an impact. That study says that there is in fact an impact. A very successful football or basketball program can increase applications between 2% - 8%. Those are healthy numbers. While women's lax would pale in comparison to those sports, a perennial final 4 team that is nationally broadcast I would think has an impact greater than 0%. While small, there is a community of lax fans in this country.

We can agree to disagree but if it's not 0%, it's about as close as you can get. Our men's lax team should move the needle multiple times more and even that is insignificant in the grand scheme of things. MBB & FB are the only significant sports in this regard.

Do you have a direct quote to that effect, or is that your assumption? Absence of evidence is not evidence of absence.

Yeah I do. Common sense.
