The biggest overall victim of ESPN's cuts now appears to be the brainchild of Bill Simmons. This is a big blow; Grantland was far and away the best printed work that the company has been doing in a very long time.

Meanwhile, Skip Bayless and Stephen A. Smith are currently screaming nonsense at each other while dozens of extremely talented writers are without jobs.

can't say i'll miss it too much. long form for the sake of long form doesn't do much for me when they don't have much to say

read like bad college essays where kids try to get to whatever required length

the nba stuff was pretty good, holtsberry?

I have my own personal qualms with Simmons, but Grantland was a favorite. If I could have written regularly at any site, I have to believe that'd have been the one I'd pick.

I'm sad at the idea that it's gone, but I won't miss it too much.

Great concept, needed tighter editorial control. 10% excellent work, 90% long fluff pieces mimicking Sports Guy's voice.

It's whatever the market will bear...and in this market, Steven A and Skip sell. Make of that what you will.

At least SAS and Skip get to scream inane H0T Takes each day and keep getting paid /snark

Unreal.

All about the money; those two sadly make more the money for the company than Grantland did lol.

Excellent post.

Smith/Bayless are unwatchable.

His/Hers or whatever it is, is close behind.

And, after about an hour Mike & Mike is tough on the ears.

Those 2 are one of the main reasons I no longer watch much ESPN, except for college football, or basketball. I don't like to listen to Idiots screaming at each other.

Simmons has been hiring the Grantland guys who's contracts expire one by one to start up his own site. I expect now he can hire them all at once. They will be back under a new name and a new banner.

This sucks. I read Grantland daily, and pretty much never visit the new ESPN site.

So of course, Grantland get axed, and all the blowhard mouth-breathers like Skip and SAS keep bloviating.

Clearly, yes, a lot of people care. It was the #1 trending topic on Twitter all day.
Not going to argue with that point, but I was on twitter during my lunch and when I got home from work and I follow around 500 or so people (including you and most are sports related) and I never saw anything about it. I hate to say it, and I am probably in the minority, but I don't read any of the ESPN stuff unless someone that I do follow has retweeted it. In my world, Grantland never existed, so how can it be dead.

I'm going to miss Grantland. There was usually 3-4 articles a week that would catch my eye and I'd read them.

Football and piping H0T Takes are the money makers at ESPN...so I'm not surprised.
